Title: car running hot and overheating at fast speeds
Post by: firemansam1066 on 13 March 2008, 20:55:05
hello folks, as the title really, my cars temperature guage sits at about 90, goes up slightly at times through normal use, but as i speed up it goes up, almost instantly.
say at 80-90 it is normal, well if its normal, but over 100 it starts to go over, at 130 the guage is off the scale and the light comes on, like i say it happens almost instantly.
i've read all the posts and all i've done is confused myself.
thanks folks. :-/

Start by flushing coolant, then looking for poor circulation.

What's its history? Previous oil cooler failure?

When my last 2.5 did that it was a blocked radiator core, had to adjust cruising speed according to indicated temperature.

That was supposed to be a relatively new radiator after accident repair, no oil cooler failure.

Tried all kind of fixes until flow check and recore cleared it.

Be wary of looking at the flow with a hose in one side of the radiator, the auxiliary pump bypasses the core and makes it look good.

Thermostat!!

try checking by immersing in boiling water!

It definetely sounds like a coolant problem, check the basics like does the radiator/pipes get hot? is hot air always avaliable from the heaters? is it losing any water? is there anything blocking the radiator? ie plastic bag, leaves etc.

I wouldnt imagine it would be the thermostat because any ive seen fail before generally makes them run hot always and not just at speeds.

i thought the thermostat would have kept the heater temperature cold but the blowers are hot in normal time. no obvious coolant loss, well i've no need to top it up anyway, nothing seemingly blocking the radiator, the rear fan spins, at temperature but the front twin fans never operate. all the radiator pipes seem hot, all i'm getting is confused.
thanks

Depends whether it's failed open or closed.

mine was heating only at high rpms and climbing the mountains..

the friend mechanics tell me to jet-wash my radiator (from mud) and added that it cant be thermostat ;D

turned out to be thermostat.. ;D

after the replacement they believe me >:(
