Title: Help with Parts
Post by: Policychecker on 19 March 2008, 15:05:11
mechanic thinks coil pack is causing msifire and shuddering, suspect he is right after reading notes on this site.

have to take car apart to get the correct type of coil pack could be one of three apparently. ranging from £101 - 141 Plus vat.

thinking of doing it myself and changing HBV while i'm at it. as no mechanic can give guaranteees anyway.

how long should it take to replace coil pack please?

what happens if car still misfires and shudders after i change dis coil pack?

Also anything else i should do while i'm in that area, like breather cleaning?

is any of the above work too dificult for a novice?

Thanks and kind regards

Not too difficult - consult the info here and ask if your unsure.

Now prior to doing the DIS ( or buying it)  i would:

Clean all breathers, check cam covers for leaks, check ignition leads for water OR oil on ends and any damage to the lead.

Also considor changing sparks and fuel filter as well as giving it a good service.

All of the above is a good start if you dont know the cars history or when the items were last done - they can all contribute to your symptoms and are all easier and cheaper than the dis pack.

Dis itself is doable DIY but cumbersome and fiddly - shop around for brand new genuine vauxhall Dis on ebay - you will get it delivered for around £80

...As for timescales - dont set one - give yourself a day and do it at your pace - ideally i can do it in a few hours comfortable, but ive done a few.

Scuttle and or Plenum off to get best access to the DIS  :y

Thanks guys, very decent of you. i'm think i'm gonna do it now. might even invest in haynes manual, anyone selling one on here?

first registered March / 1999 2.5 auto elite.

gonna have to do a bit more research to figure out what Scuttle and  Plenum are....

last car i worked on was in early eighties, a 1966 mark II cortina E. well it actually started as a 1500 GT. car were so simple then eh! thought it was the dogs back then...

MARKIE - You mentioned to check for oil etc, well one spark plug and lead is imersed in oil, from last mechanic, actually all this atrted after he had serviced the car. ran like a pig. afterwards he later replaced the leads and said if it wasn't that it would be the coil pack.

think i'll do the whole lot and then get someone to tune it for me - what do you think?

That then would suggest cam covers need replacing - do a search on here to find out how to - make sure you do both banks and ONLY use gen vx parts...

Scuttle is the plastic trim along windscreen that the wipers sit on - remove wipers and scuttle for dis access - plenum is the ceramic top of engine with ECO TEC on it.. Be warned getting the DIS pack out seems daunting and impossible as you need to do it by feel and not sight - but its possible with persistance..

You may be worth while reading through the maintainance section of the site - lots of good tips in there on doing cam covers and dispack if i remember rightly  :-/

A Haynes is a good investment but we often have a better alternative method on here of DIY mechanics than Mr Haynes... ;)
