Hi guys, I am a noob, so pls forgive me...
I bought an Omega 2.0 1999 Automatic, 6 weeks ago(wife told me not to), that started to give me trouble almost right away,(I didn't tell her), it started to cut out when stopped at traffic lights, etc, so I changed the fuel filter, thinking this might be just dirt causing the prob..it was still doing it, but not so often, but then I found it was not going into gear right, pull away 1, 2, then miss gear like it was in neutral, followed by a kick as it engaged 3rd....Followed by stuck in top gear.....Then on the dashboard display, comes up "Automatic transmission....Check"
Anyway I brought it to a mechanic to have it checked out, and he found that the EML (engine man light) was not working, so there was no memory of problems stored, and in his opinion, someone had disconnected it to hide any problems from the buyer,(Bloody me!!) ..
What I need to know is..
How would he have done it?
I had the tranny fluid checked, all ok! is it I am in big trouble?
ps, had to tell the wife the car wont go and I may have been conned, my face still hurts from the slap

Firstly
Do the breather clean as listed in another section, do not neglect the idle control valve nor the pipe into the inlet manifold from the cam cover. Either will cause this stalling. The small hole into the manifold from the pipe MUST be clear or you will not eradicate stalling.
Secondly
Remove and clean the gearbox selector switch, or buy a known good one.
Thirdly
Get the light bult replaced and carry out a paperclip test, and report back with the answers.
Nothing major sounds wrong

Firstly dont worry,
we have the same motor and i have had the same problems with mine.
Did the garage check the atf level? mine presented a simular fault orginally to find i had water ingress from the gearbox breather pipe hanging down and sucking in water when we had the floods last year.
if the garage didnt check the level i would look there and let us know what colour it is? red is good dark brown is bad. it should smell kinda sweety (stinks ) if it smells burnt it needs changing.
it sounds like you just brought a motor that needs some tlc.
good luck.

ok I have taken the breather apart, and am going to clean the hose's but no mention of what to use...can I use carb cleaner on everything, someone told me u cant...also do I clean the air flow meter too
By the way, can I spray the butterfly flap too...on looking at the butterfly, and pulling the trottle to open it, looking down, I could see a small pool of what looks like oil...
I have never done this before, so I am worried s***less
-
Taking out the EML light won't mean the Ecu isn't storing trouble codes. It just means the driver won't see the light!
Change that bulb, 20 min job at most, and do the paperclip test for the codes...
On the 2.0 clean all breathers with carb cleaner. Leave the air flow meter alone.
Gearbox - if fluid is ok, clean out or change the selector switch for a known good. Failing that, it could be the thrust washer, which means the gearbox has to come out...
-
Can I spray carb cleaner on the rubber hose's? Having looked at the hose's from the air filter right back to the throttle body, the amount of crap in them, to me anyway, is just to much to be normal, or it has never been cleaned.....plenty of crap on the throttle butterfly too....
As for the auto fluid, according to the mechanic, there is plenty and it is fine...He said he cant check the diagnostic on the gear box as it is seperate unit and he does not have the equipment for that, only the engine...He also said that there is no codes been stored on the engine...
Aghhhhhhhh!!!
-
get that butterfly and all hoses squeaky clean
Yes you can use carb cleaner, it's the best
you'll probs need to remove the big pipe that bolts to the crankcase..
-
Do NOT forget the one under the throttle body to the cam cover

Hi Jomolo, welcome to the forum.
If you're not used to doing jobs on your car, all these things can sound very daunting. Do not panic or despair. If you are prepared to read the relevant topics in maintenance sections you will be able to solve these problems far more cheaply than most garages, and if you get stuck you can ask questions and get answers just as you have done already.
I solved my idle/cutting out problems that way, and now consider myself competent to do it whenever necessary. The gearbox I know nothing about, (yet), but the experts on here will give you all the answers you need.
And then you can make your wife pay for a celebration dinner. ::) ::)

Here is an update.....
Got the EM light working and was able to get areading off it now..
Mech said "Exhaust airflow sensor was not working and that is the problem with cutting out," and he wants about 300 quid to replace it, as it is 196 plus vat just for the sensor!!!!!!!!
As for the gearbox, he said "Nothing is showing up on the computer for faults, and it maybe a hydraulic problem, but deff' not electrical.
I am stummped!!!!!!!!

And having said all that, I followed all the great info you guys have givin' ref cleaning all the breathers and the cutting out seems to have stopped....Thanks guys!!!!

1 more thing new, and I dont know if it makes a differance, but, if I am driving and it refuses to go in to gear, ie 3rd, I drop the gears from D to 3 on the gear box I get gear no problem, and can drive around the city ok for quite awhile with little problems
-
He's a idiot.
Exhaust airflow sensor. What a pillock. He means lamda.
Anyway, have you done the obvious of cleaning icv, throttle body, and breather system?
-
Yes, done all that and as I said the cutting out seems to have stopped...the instructions where great!!!!
I am just concerned now about the gearbox, I am worried that I may do damage if I keep driving it, but I need it to earn, as I am a taxi driver......
By the way a good friend of mine was offered one this week, for 3k, 00 model 2.0L Auto same spec as mine, withou the problems...Is 3K about the going rate?

3k is a bit expensive for 2.0l over here, not sure about Ireland.
What are gearbox symptoms?

Quite simple really to explain...
Stick it in drive D, car pulls away no problem, changes up to 2nd, as it reaches 30mph, about to change up to 3rd, it's like it slips out of gear and you free wheel for a bit, if I rev up sometimes it goes in to 3rd, but not always, it goes in to 4th....but mainly what happens, is I let it freewheel for a couple of seconds, then it will kick into 3rd...
I did notice, if I just manualy drop the stick back to 3rd and drive not in D but 3 it goes fine...It's almost like D is not working properly......
Any ideas???? It's driving me nuts, and as a taxi driver, I am trying to not let my passengers notice..... ;D

Hmm, had not dissimilar on one of my old AR25 boxes in tractor - it would work perfectly for ages, then all of a sudden lose drive. Slotting into N for a second or 2, then back in D always brought back drive.
Never investigated, as I needed the stronger box on mine anyway, so just swapped it. Sassanach and I did quickly strip it down, but nothing obviously amiss. I'm guessing a solenoid problem, but don't know.
Sorry I can't help more :'(

Have you checked the fluid level and condition?
-
Just solved the same problem on my 98 CDX saloon by getting my local mechanic to add more autobox fluid (Dextron III). Existing fluid, what there was left, was fine, red and all that. He charged me 10 quid for the oil and gave me the 5 minutes on the ramp for nowt, job done. Give it a go if you know an honest one, its worth it.
Now I just hope its not gonna run dry again any time soon, lol. A scary situ fixed for a tenner, awesome.
