Title: Elite woes continue! Suspension replacement
Post by: V8S on 25 March 2008, 10:22:59
Not had a great deal of luck with this car so far, chaps.

I've now managed to damage the top of one of the self-levelling dampers (passenger side) after, I suspect, the air hose came loose, losing all pressure, and the damper body slammed up into the ring where it goes into the body when I went over a bump slowly. The ring now sits, bent, at about a 30 degree angle to what it should be.

The car is now almost undrivable (managed to limp a mile back to the g/f's house) and I had to be recovered all the way back down to Dorset.

Replacement self levellers are ££££s it seems. I don't really think I'll ever use the facility and I know some people replace with standard shocks. Kwik-fit were unable to help me (one of the few open over the weekend) but suggested either Bilstein or Spax.

Can anyone tell me exactly what is the best replacement suspension and the part number and approx cost? Seem to recall Bilstein could be had for about £25 a pop...?

And is it a job I can do myself?

(I know it's been discussed before several times, but the search function on here is lamentable at best)

Thanks for your help,

Graham

Loss of air pressure wouldnt cause any damage, just a lower ride height. I guess the shock has lost all hydraulic damping.

Fault on self levelling suspension on omega causes it to raise to full height as original poster highlighted, but rock hard!

Advice would be get a trade-club card mate!

About £75 each for air shocks on TC, about £50 each for normal.  Obviously, replace in pairs.

Looks tempting but... club rules say:

(A) 6 cyl only
(B) Up to Omega B

I have a facelift diesel.

A) its an 'interest' in 6cylinder Omegas
B) you have an Omega B

Well worth it for the discounts on standard service items

(A) I think you're missing the important "an interest in"
(B) You have an Omega B, all UK badged Omegas are Omega B Omega A was the Carlton and there is no such thing as Omega C it's just an Omega B  facelift same as mine.

For non-gen non adjustable shocks consider Bilstein OEM units from Balance motor sport  :y

That's what I asked about in my original post, but I'm not very mechanically minded so I need a bit of help if possible.

Unfortunately I don't know whether I can wait 3 weeks for a trade club card to turn up as I am having to drive the TVR in the meantime, which is a 'little' worse on fuel consumption, further reducing the funds I have to sort out the Omega.

Does anyone near Dorset have a trade club card that they'd be willing to use to buy the parts I need? Help greatly appreciated. :y

Anyone have the part number for the self levelling suspension on a saloon facelift?

Cheers.

Thanks. In the absence of a TC card at the mo, a local garage is getting me one trade price for about £75 + VAT.

I shall be joining TC very soon though!

Does OOF have the intention of discussing with Vauxhall a TC card option for members?

I believe that Vauxhall demand membership fees/cards/administration before it will even consider TC status for new clubs, and - I think - about 4 years continuous activity of the said "closed" group...

Previous comments by the Admins here suggest - strongly - that they do not wish to become a "closed" group but want to remain as open and friendly as at the moment ... something I think we all thank and agree with them for.

If you want a TC join ABS for £20 .. :)

If I'm wrong I'm sure one of the Admin staff will correct me .. :)
