Title: V6 head removal, engine in or engine out?
Post by: DaveMarshall on 27 March 2008, 22:13:00
Just wondering what peoples view were on removing and re-fitting the heads on a V6 from past experiences would you rather do it in situ or remove the engine completeley for better access?

Dave.

Blimey, that's a lot of reading lol.  I've removed plenty of Omega engines complete but never changed the heads in situ, I removed one of the heads this afternoon and the other is almost ready to come off just ran out of light as working outside, just seemed such a long complicated job compared to how easy it would be with the engine on the floor so just thought i'd see what anyone else thought.

Thanks for the replies.

Did James ever follow up with the pics and diagrams mentioned in this excellent guide? Are they under another heading, perhaps?

Its each to there own but i think its better to remove and if you have a two post ramp then take it out though the bottom.

I think if it was a Calibra/Cavalier or Vectra V6 then it isn't too bad removing them in situ, I just thought when removing these from the Omega that it was all quite awkward I think if I did it again i'd remove the engine for better access.  Anyway the heads I was removing ended up having 12 bent valves so need to get those sorted.

I always remove the engine through the top on Omega's without the gearbox as it saves taking any of the suspension e.t.c to pieces, Vectra's e.t.c alway take out through the bottom.

It definately takes longer to remove and re-fit the engine and swap the heads....it might be easier though.

Then there is the need ro re-charge the aircon after.
