Title: Thermostat change 3.0 V6
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 28 March 2008, 18:45:37
Hi

Anyone give me an idea of how easy/hard it is to change the thermostat on a V6??

Does anyone have a How 2 guide for it?? I have had a look on here and can't find one.

Thanks

Scott

About 3 hrs, you need to strip off the plenum, injector rail and in let manifold. This gets you to the heart of the V where the thermostate lives.
Then you will need to remove the transfer pipe to the thermostate and then the state itself

In practice you may find it rather difficult to separate the transfer pipe from the the housing.
Moving the power steering reservoir out of the way will make access to the the transfer pipe bolt easier, but still challenging.
I have given up on separating the joint and use a small die grinder to cut a slot in the thermostat housing. A large screwdriver blade can the be used to crack the pipe and allow movement.
You are going to throw the old housing away in any case.
One of the thermostat bolts is threaded into the waterway, use sealant on reassembly.

Like already said above Plenum, Inlet manifold and flange to be taken off. I undid the thermostats two torx bolts and got my grips on it wiggling it free from the Transfer Pipe first (as you will be replacing it anyway).
Then again like above, undo the bolt that holds the Power Steering Reservior and move it towards the bulkhead so the pipe moves out of the way of the "Problem Bolt!" it really isn't that much of a problem to get out (but getting it back in seems to be the problem.. There are three things that share the bolt, an engine lifting bracket, dipstick and Transfer pipe, just make a note of which order they go in.. then the bolt will go back quiet easy).
Once you have removed the bolt you will need to turn the transfer pipe anti clockwise to get it out of the way of the dipstick. (I removed the Transfer Pipe but next time I wont) just slide it out enough to get the thermostat housing out.
Replace the two "O" rings on the end of the transfer pipe (then i put a smear of grease over them so it slides easily into the thermostat). Refit the new thermostat and bolt it down, slide in the transfer pipe, turn it clockwise around the dipstick now making sure you have the three things in order replace the problem bolt. Refit the Power Steering Reservior and Job Done :y

I wish it was that easy!  Had a bit of a 'mare doing mine...bloody awkward  bolt.  Also the top pipe had the old type clamp clips - extremely difficult to get to and get off..

Dont do it!!!! I did mine a couple of months ago, and believe me, I would have paid very well for someone to have done it, my knuckles and hands were in tatters when i'd finished, it took me nearly 4 hours to do, partly because the housing was well and truly stuck tight, and there is no room at all to seperate the housing from the block without damaging it, in the end, I looked on fleabay for the part, and manually and litterally ripped the old housing off - and it took some effort  :-X You may be ok tho, every car is different, I had the old bill servicing mine before I bought it so that says something "never rely on a police car to get you from A to B"  ;D

Replace them with a jubilee clip easier to tighten up :y

Thanks for all the advice so far. Its been a while since I got my hands dirty so i am definitely going to give it a go.

One thing - I bought the new stat from a local parts shop who I trust but you all seem to be saying that I have to replace the housing too. Is that right? Do I need to buy a new housing as well as the stat?

Thanks

The genuine part comes complete with the housing, but not the o rings you'll need.

It's much quicker to sacrifice the old housing by cutting a slot in it.

That way you won't be held up for days waiting for a out of stock transfer pipe.

The stat is built into the housing you have to change it all, if your parts shop has given you just a stat they have dropped a BIG un.
Buy it from Vx you'll get the right one then.

Dont neccessarily agree....   the stat can be undone and replaced without the housing on some....

Replace the complete housing and thermostat. I replaced one on our Corsa recently, turned out that it was the aluminium housing that wears where the thermostat disc seats onto it, sometimes it would settle onto a ridge worn in the ally and wouldnt seal so very long warm-up next day.

Halfords, Partco etc only seem to stock thermostats for the 2.0, not the V6 ones, dont know where they get their information from because they insist that there is only one type of thermostat fitted to all Omegas. We know different dont we. I was even told that my engine must be wrong >:(
Watch out for a later, 'improved' thermostat being supplied by VX dealers, the base flange is thicker so you have to get the matching longer bolts.
