Title: Oil cooler

Hi guys how often does the oil cooler cause problems I seem to have an oil leak which smells worst going up hill heads seem OK today as I took off all the inlet but I seem to have some oil (not huge) around the oil cooler. Plus does it sit in coolant or air as haynes say you must put a beed of sealant around it before whacking back on. I suppose it could still be the heads but it don't look like it and she passed the MOT yesterday. Help please (as normal)

The oil cooler sits in water not air ;)

If you have a V6 the engine oil cooler sits in the water system that cools the oil cooler down.
If you oil cooler is leaking oil mate you should have oil in your water reservoir....
If you dont have oil in your reservoir but oil over the top of the cooler plate maybe one of the washers that seals the oil pipes are leaking.
If your oil cooler plate wasn't sealed with the proper sealant you should get water on the top of the plate not oil...

TA haynes don't tell ya that saves me one job don't need to take the thing off totally now just change the washers HOPEFULLY if anybody knows if these are the right symptoms let me know.

if you are smelling oil more likely to be cam cover gaskets  :y

hiya,,
 we are talking about the V6 here arent we? i know that the rocker gaskets leak alot so maybe it could be from there,, the problem as far as i`m aware is that the oil exchange unit( cooler) become porous and mixed with the water creating the mayonnaise you see in the expansion tank,, if oil is coming from the unit i could only think its from the unions , the fins of the unit are submerged in the coolant,, vx changed these for stainless steel to over come the puros prob but not sure in which year,, this happened on my V6 ,i bought a new one from vx which is stainless steel,, they come with the silicon.
 not sure if any of this helps,  and i stand to be corrected on any this as the lads on this site really do know they are talking about.

I agree about the Cam Covers, but if like this guy is saying that the oil cooler plate is covered in oil do you still think it would be the Cam Covers?

i`m thinking the oil pipes that feed the cooler will be under pressure so if they were leaking there would be alot of oil there were as oil just leaks out of the badly sealed cam covers,,, hot oil is really thin and i`ve seen it travel all over the engine bay,, i can only go off my calibra V6 here as thats the only one i`ve worked on,,, but i remember changing the plugs and the wells were for of oil

I got Oil Cooler and Plate..... the washers and sealer were extra..

If the spark plug wells are full of oil mate do your Cam Covers and breathers. Cam Cover Gaskets, plus O rings and sealer should cost you £73 ish, £63 ish with TC  :y

 i have the box with the cooler in the back of my car,, its got the sealant with it,,, i`ll try n look to see what the part number is,, sure its got vayxhall on it as well,
 as for the engine that was in my calibra i took it out as i`m putting a 3L in instead of the 2.5,, but will pay alot of attention to the beathers when i fit it,,
