Title: towing with omega (again,sorry)
Post by: charlieboy on 02 April 2008, 16:37:19
Hi, thanks to all who replied last time, just a small question: I have taken my car onto the highway towing, and as stated by several members the temp went up to almost 90 after about ten miles, so I switched the a/c on and the temp came down, what I would like to know is this temp ok and would the auto fan click in and keep the temp down without using the a/c, I admit I did panic a bit and perhaps turned the a/c too quickly, I will have to travel 196 miles (Motorway next week and any assurance I can get will be much appreciated. cheers

If it was going to overheat then it would have done so after 10 miles pulling a weekend pikey wagon mate, so i think that you should be ok. 90degrees on the gauge is fine and shows that your cooling system is in fine fettle. :)

What kind of speed were you travelling at? I'd be suprised if a fan could push/pull more air through your rad than the force of the air while moving could.
90 degs? My 3.0's temp is about 92/93 deg ayway without a 'van on the back. It'll rise a few degrees but never anything very much. The only time I had any significant engine temp rise was when I maintained my 65mph up a very long incline on the motorway, that's when I discovered there was a red high temp warning lamp, but things soon sorted themselves out as the motorway levelled out.

Hi Andy, I was travelling about 60 as norm, It is normally about 80/85 so I suppose 90 inst so bad, Of couseI havent been up any hills yet, there is not many in Norfolk to try.

You could always put a flush through the rad. A pretty cheap & easy thing to do & no harm done if it has no effect. You could always renew your coolant too, that way you'll know you're OK for the next couple of years - if you keep it that long. :-?

The temp. guage is not a precise measurement of the engine temp. but an indication that things are within an acceptable range. It's certainly not abnormal for the guage to rise towards  the red section under heavy load situations, provided the fans kick in and reduce it quickly. It sounds to me as if your system is working normally, but keep an eye on it to ensure that it's consistent.
In the old days, ::), I think it was accepted that the hotter an engine ran, within reason, without boiling over, the more efficient it was, but I'm prepared to be corrected by the experts on here.

90C is about midpoint on the gauge on a 2.6, and is absolutely fine :)

It's a method of reading fault codes on certain Omega engines. See Omega FAQ section, last item, 2nd. page.
