Title: Noise from cambelt area
Post by: ricardo1500 on 04 April 2008, 20:33:12
Hi all
2.2 petrol auto with 80000miles.  Cambelt tensioner rollers and water pump changed 8000 miles/16 months ago from autovaux.

Did a 220 mile run last weekend and have since detected a "dry bearing sound from engine front.

Removed aux belt but noise still there.

Removed cambelt cover and pretty sure its its either tensioner, roller or water pump. Which of these is  the usual suspect?

Its there a check to tell if I'm right....strip and check for play??

Is ther any thing else it could be...I am suprised they could have failed so quickly.

tensions, my opinon, best way and safest , take belt off and check ;)

I would say waterpump on instinct but at 8000 miles seems unlikely.

If it is the water pump they can make a huge amount of noise in use but really not feel too bad when turned by hand. But any roughness and it's a bad'n.

I do have the old water pump still.....I changed them as soon as I bought the car and the pump looked brand new and was silent so can try putting that back in as a trial ...I will say the autovaux pump dint have the same "quality" look about it altghough they swore it wqas the same.....makes me wonder about the quality of the tensioners as well.

If the tensioners or rollers are shot will they feel rough when turned by hand?

Autovaux have unwhelmed me lately. They use phases like OEM when the parts are definitely not.

is it definatly comeing from the cam belt area as i had a freind who thought the cam belt had jumped as it made all the right nosies so changed a the tensioners and belt and it turned out it was low on oil

No mate ...have checked the oil an it is right up to the top mark.  Looks like I am doomed to a day out in the snow tomorrow!!

If you're going to go to the trouble of stripping down to that extent, maybe a new water pump at £20 - £30 is a better bet than putting the old one in??

Just a thought?  :-/

Well it was the water pump.....loads of play in the bearing and sounds rough when spun by hand off the car. Auto vaux are going to get their warranty man to ring me on Monday, just over 12 months old but only 7-8000 miles use...we will see!
