While I was attempting to change the selector switch on my 98 2.5td auto the car slipped off the jack and cracked the sump.
I've tried to remove it to see how bad the damage is but I cant get it to pull away from the autobox.
I was wondering if there are any hidden bolts holding it in or if there is a particular way to remove it.
Thanks for any help.

How the hell did it wreck the sump :o
I'll try to take a peek at the TD engine sat on my garage floor, but think its only the bolts you can see

My Jack decided to fall apart as i was raising the car using the cross brace. Silly i know but its done now. The head of the jack hit the sump next to the sump plug, Snapped one of the fins next to it and cracked the sump.

You were changing the selector switch with the car only supported by a jack ???
BLOODY STUPID - DO NOT WORK UNDER CARS ON JACKS !
Please, please, please invest in some axle stands and USE THEM.
A schoolboy friend of mine was killed when working under a cortina just on a jack, it fell off somehow and he was trapped and slowly died as the weight gradually crushed his chest. The mess his hands were in showed how he deperately tried to free himself.
Please DON'T DO IT
rant over .. sorry ... :(
Edit - Full and abject apology .. cross posted ... just read your second post. .. sorry to rant but I feel strongly about this.. :(

I agree that is stupid. However I was actually raising the car to put the stands under it when it slipped.
I never go underneath without at least 1 stand there. Preferably 4 of them.

Not a problem. I have a friend that was hurt doing that so I understand what you mean.

Dont use the subframe to jack the car up - its not strong enough for one - it will distort - and its as slippery as anything, esp on the tractors.

Does anybody have any idea where i could find a new sump?

Dealer I'm afraid, and will probably have to wait a while. Scrappy ones will probably have sump stripped, as its made of monkey metal. BMW crap.
There are 2 different types as well, not sure of the differences, but I know the sump plug varies between them.
