my lovly 2.5 omega sit on my drive is been there for 18 months,
I replaced the engine with one I bought from a braker for
£600 it took me 6 months to put it in, and get it on the road
soon it started to steam but the 6 months guarantee wos up.
So there it sits with the head gasket gone ,it still drives well
but i dont drive it as it leaks oil from the cam covers.
I dont have the time to do the heads and the quotes iv,d had
are over a grand I dont want to let it go ,i was offered £100 to have it
taken away, (no way I spent £600 on new tyres) so it sits on my drive.
eny one know wot to do

what makes you think it is hg?
-
Nothing so far to suggest its defo head gasket mate...do you have a yellowy mayo kind of mixture on the dipstick??? White fumes coming out of the exhaust?? Or maybe oil in the water header tank?
Oil leaking out of the cam gaskets is pretty cheap to do and easy enough to sort out...
Also you should update your profile to show where you are :)

Hi thanks for replying,
there is lots of cream in the oil filler cap and a small amount of steam from the exhaust, I dont know if it is relevant ,ther is oil up in to the intake manifold.
-
Mayo on the filler cap is normal, anything in the header tank?
-
there is no oil in the header tank or on the dip stick

Can you smell petrol fumes from the header?
-
I have stripped 2 cars in a row recently that had actual head gasket failure, its VERY rare for the v6 and usually caused by continuing to run the car when something else has failed such as oil cooler or water pump and the car is overheating...
Dipstick covered in mayo and when the engine is stripped its everywhere, you really cant miss it...bit of steam from exhaust could be something completely different, mayo on filler cap is more than likely down to doing short journeys...can be helped by regular oil changes and using genuine Vaux semi synthetic oil...what other symptoms do you have to suggest HG?
-
theres no smell of petrol from the header tank
-
Not sounding HG tbh, apart from the steam from the exhaust, what else is wrong with the car?? Is it overheating at all?? What temp does it run at??
-

As Chris just said, they are rare to have HG failure but it does happen as the case of my MV6, but yours isn't sounding like a HG failure, strong smell of fumes from header and dipstick covered in mayo is a giveaway, yours has neither of these, i would investigate further
-
The temp runs normal at all times but I have to fill the header tank 2 times a week on average.

I'd be looking for leaks first, HBV possibly?
-
Do you have signs of water leaking under the car?? HBV would be a definite favourite here...not a particularly hard or expensive fix, just a fiddly one lol

Heater Bypass Valve, its just a rubber valve that sends hot water from the engine bay into the cabin for your aircon etc to use...sits behind the engine roughly in line with the left hand bank of spark plugs on a v6 (looking at the engine bay from the front of the car)...
-
None of the description of the symptoms sudgests head gasket to me so far....
-
Do you know, I dont know whether to be happy or sad ,maybe my my car has been on my drive for 18 months with just a oil leak from the cam covers .
I think I will fix the leak and put it back on the road and run it for a bit and see wot happens.
do you have eny advice ,I noted the cam covers did not sit on the rims
of the head inline ,they were bent in a bit in the middle new one would be the answer.
-
Advice...make sure when your topping up your adding a 50/50 mix or water/antifreeze...especially as its a regular top up...plus use genuine vaux gaskets for cam covers...and as you will have plenum off for cam covers...may as well change HBV (about £30 from vaux iirc) as its pretty eay to do then (take scuttle off for easier access though...

HBV - Heater by-pass valve.

Bad news iv just looked in the header tank and is gunket up with creamy crap

That is more likely an oil cooler on a V6. In fact, its not possible for HG failure to cause that on a V6.
-
Probably oil cooler not the head gasket
