Title: Really bad oil leak can anyone help?
Post by: vomegaowner on 06 April 2008, 21:40:33
Hello let me start by saying that i have dun both the rocker cover gaskets and cleaned the breather system but i still have a leak?

I drove 35miles to work this morning most of way at 30mph due to the heavy down full of snow but i had to pull over and top oil up buy about a ltr as the computer said OIL LACK i can see it running down the right side of bell houseing but only leaks when the oil is hot also there are lots of smoke coming from right side exhaust manifold.

I say right side as you face the engine looking back.
It runs down from where oil filter is if the helps but higher than filter if you get my drift?
I really hope somone can put some light on this as its driving me crazy.
Many thanks for reading.

I would check that the cam cover gasket hasn't been dislodged when you were replacing it. The passenger side one is the most difficult because of the wiring loom tray.

sounds like you have got a cam cover half moon not in the right position ! did you use genuine vauxhall cam cover gaskets and the black sealant ??? and did you clean your breathers out properly ??  :-?

Has this only been hapening since you did the cam gaskets ??? When I did mine I just caught the gasket that side and it pulled 1 inch section out of the cover ... leaked like a sieve .. and thats the hard side to get right due to the cable tray .... :(

It might pay you to check the gasket, and the bit where the "half moon" sits right at the back, that is also easy to move as you fit the cover .. :(

I'm assuming you put the black sealant in the right places ???   :)

I used gen gaskets and sealent , the right side was very hard and i changed them as i thort it was the cam covers but it is on right side so maybe it is the cam cover still i will strip it down again and have a look maybe it is the half moon bits as they slot in dont they? if its caught then maybe that is problem?

You can remove the tray around the loom to make access easier but be careful with the plastic clips as they will have become brittle

I found I had to remove the tray from the cable completely and tie the cabling back out of the way to guarantee a proper job of refitting the cam cover on the passenger side. It needs checking and rechecking several times to ensure it's properly seated. Tighten the bolts to 8nm and no more.

Depends how you drive it ... :)  On a motorway run I can get mid 30's. I had a 2.5 before .. also averaged mid twenties over 5 years ..  :)

I do tow a large caravan quite often, and I tend to drive quite quickly .....  :)

And with this beast it is just fun, fun, and more fun ....   :)
