I have just been told that there are 2 different timing belts, my engine number does not seem to help.
Can anyone advise me what the differences are between the two?
My engine is a 2002 2.6
TIA :y

may or may not help....but the 2.6 vec i have had an issue with the backing plate as well - i believe there are two.
Doesnt answer your question but something to be aware of :-/

Engine number should do it. Why was that a problem?

Is this down to whether the bottom idler is adjustable?
Have a look. I think the old (adjustable) setup is with the tensioner quite close to the crank pulley. On the later (non-adjustable) cars it is about 1/2 way along the belt run between the crank pulley and cam 4 sprocket, so higer and further over on the engine.
At the same time, the tensioner backplate changed to position the adjustable idler differently between the 2 banks. IIRC, it used to be central between the banks and it moved towards cam 3's sprocket, although I'm not 100% sure I've got that round the right way. :-/

moine has a part number where the engine number is, it is a vaux recon lump that i have bought 2nd hand.
I was under the impression it was due to the bottom idler pulley but couldn't be sure

The bottom idler pulley was positioned centrally from about 98 onwards, its the top mount that changed along with the bottom idler being non-adjustable. If the backing plate has a couple of small pegs in the back of it for location purposes then its the later version.

And if all else fails, as was my case i just put all the new rollers onto the old backplate as my kit was wrong :-/

I would have thought that a 2.6 was bound to be the later type - they didn't make it for that long did they?

2.5/2.6/3.0/3.2 08300419 to 08578511 p/n - 9201887
2.5/2.6/3.0/3.2 from 08578512 p/n - 93172354
So you can see there are two different kits :y
