Hi Guys
I have an intermittant starting problem with my 2001 2.2 CD auto. It started yesterday. I turned the key all the usual lights came on but when I got to the ignition point nothing happend it was totally dead. I at first thought flat battery, I put the booster/charger on the battery and she started up fine. I drove for a few miles and then parked up (Intending to charge the bat over night) I started her up again with no problems and drove into town, and parked up for a couple of hours on my return the same problem with starting as before. I called the AA who again boost started the car, and then he checked the battery, alternator, starter motor which are all ok. He said it could be a relay problem but was unsure of it's location. She started up ok this morning. I do need to get this problem solved as it's a bit scary going out in the car and not knowing if she will start up on my return. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Gooders

Before getting too complicated I personally would check the cables and connections to the starter motor and the battery; the alternator can be ruled out at this point as the starting is relying on the battery.(How old is the battery?)
After that check the main fuses (6) in the box above/next to the battery are all ok / fully engaged.
If all this fails carry out a 'paper clip' test to see if any codes appear. :y
A further question is: does everything else work ok when the engine won't turn over?
It could of course be a sticking starter motor, so my next step would be to remove and inspect the drive mechanism; does it freely spin down the shaft?
I hope this helps. :y
The experts on this site can no doubt take this process of checking further as required. :y

Can't paperclip a 2.2 you will need to get the codes read with a code reader/ tech2.
I'd be guessing at crank sensor but get codes read and post here.

Whould a decent auto electrician have the Tech2 gear to check out the electrics, or is it dealer only. Or can any one here help me , I'm located in Doncaster.

A decent garage should have a code reader that can do it.
Only genuine tech2 on the forum is Marks DTM in Nottingham or The Boy in Brackley.
A cheapo tech2 lead from ebay should do it but some work better than others, might be worth asking what other 2.2 drivers use.

I had a similar problem on a 96 reg 2.5 cdx once, VX said starter motor but it turned out to be a relay behind the glovebox

Does EML flash when turning ign on when it fails?
Is starter turning over?
-
Yeah, had the same problem, starter replay tucked up behind the dash on the left hand side. I did have to remove the air bag to get to it.

There is no starter relay on Omegas after 1995ish....next time it does it, give the gear shifter a wiggle....

Checked all leads fuses etc this morning all seam ok. EML does not flash when turning ign on, no the starter does not turn over everthing is dead, but the dash board lights and electrics work lights wipers etc the car just fails to start. Have tried wiggling the gear stick and moving it from park to neutral but no joy with that. Started up ok this morning turned it on/off several times all ok. A mate recommended an auto sparky so whilst the car was running I've dropped it off with him for the day. He's going to check things out but until it wont actually start, he's unsure what it could be. He did say theres certain faults that the EM dont detect. So I just hope the problem arises whilst he has the car today. Thanks for everbodys help and comments so far, keep the ideas coming. I will update the post as and when a remedy is found.

Its simpler than a simple thing......if the starter motor is not running thne it must be
1) Faulty/iffy starter motor (not a common fault by any means)
2) Failing ignition switch (again, not common)
3) Iffy gearbox selector switch..........becasue on an auto the start wire goes via the selector swicth.
There is no ECU or relay involved.

I agree with what your saying mark regarding the gearbox my mrs on a couple of occasions has had to play with the gear stick to get the car to start, so it could be that. I did think she my not have depressed the foot brake or pulled the selector lever up, but it seems now this may have been the start of the problem has this did happen a few months ago. If I get no joy with the auto electrician, would you be interested in having a look as I see you are in Nottingham which is not to far from me in Doncaster.

Well all the best! :y Problems like this are a swine to get to the bottom of, and elimination is often the only way to source an answer. :y

Thanks Lizzie, My omega has been with the auto electrician all day and guess what has started every turn of the key. Marks DTM has eliminated a good few things with his posts.
