Title: Cam Belt Replaced
Post by: johnnycboy on 02 May 2008, 15:55:54
Hi

Have just fitted new cambelt, only thing is the belt had yellow marks as well as white marks.  When fitted with white marks cam 1 & 2 lined up but cam 3 & 4 were way off.  so timed with yellow crank marks.  cam 1 & 2 lined up with yellow marks and cam 3 & 4 lined up with white marks.  Have check timing after full rotations and all seem as it should be.  Have not started car yet, just wondered if anybody else as come across this. btw used correct cam locking kit and dvd.
any help appreciated :question

I have always ended up using trial and error as to which marks to use. IIRC, there aren't yellow marks for all the sprockets, just the ones that are different to the white ones.

Regardless of how you got there, if the engine can be turned through 2 turns and all the cams come back into alignment you've done it.  :y

You know that the painted marks are irrelevant once the engine has been rotated don't you?  So just rely on the timing guage from the kit and ensure everything is torqued up properly.

what i meant was when the belt was first fitted.  I had to align the yellow marks on the crank and yellow marks on cams 1 & 2 and white marks on cams 3 & 4.  according to the dvd and documentation the white marks should have been used on crank and all cams.  but i was unable to line up cams 3 & 4 with the white marks.  Everything seems to be ok though, all the timing marks line up after full rotations.  so i assuming it will be alright when i start it.

thx

then it should be ok. The marks are just a guide (haha) when fitting.

The Gates belt has the two sets of markings to suit different engine types. I think it actually explains how they work in the instructions (i.e. use yellow for 1&2 and white for 3&4).

remember, so belts done have markings ;)

as long as after a few turns, cam sprocket marks align with timing tool marks with crank locked, and tensioner lines up, its right :y

The star of the show is our very own Marks_DTM_Calib, the car belonged to Laidback66 iirc, and the camera/editing/production was Robin Hood.
