hi all
over last fortnight i have been getting oil smell from car my first thought was "oh no not cam covers again "as only done last august but on closer exam ive found its peeing out of the input shaft of the rear diff ive ad a slight leak for quite a while on the pass output shaft but not enough to warrant strip but now !!!!! ill have to get summat done ive been quoted £266 to repair does that seem reasonable i thought i could get one from breakers but may be same so advice needed

Just change the pinion seal.....about 15 quid for the seal and 1.5 hours to do the job.

thanks mark but does diff need to come out they said preload will have to be redone and cant be done with diff in car

My approach has always been to re-position the pinion nut back to where it came off.....as in my mind the same pre-load will be applied.

I fully agree with you, but this is not something I would recommend to somebody unless they had good mechanical skills. Actually I usually make it a gnats whisker tighter to account for wear.

Alan, I prefer to set the pinion nut exactly where it came from....making sure I have some clear and accurate marks before disturbing it. My reasoning is that if the diff is quiet then the crownwheel and pinion are running happily in that position. If you re-set the preload to compensate for bearing wear then you change the relative positions of the crownwheel and pinion teeth slightly and you could end up with a whining diff.
