Hello.
Seen a similar post but do not want to add to that to avoid confusion with that topic.
I am making tentative enquiries about picking up a later model car but one i have come across for sale has a fault with the auto box.
I have not seen car as of yet but in owners own words fault is as follows...
"The problem with the gearbox is that once you have driven approx 6-7 miles and the car is warm a little appears on the dash. When this does happen the gears do not shift properly when moving from 1st to 2nd, all other gears seem to work correctly, other than this the car works fine since you can change the gears manually from 1 to 2 to 3 and then shift to drive."
More info on the car is its a 1998 done 64k with full history.
Does this sound an expensive fault or is it as suggested in the other post a case of chane & flush fluids and/or the selector switch.
I have done some searches looking for similar problems but drawn a blank. I do recall seeing some ages ago but cannot find them.
Thank you, Jez

A bit like how long is a piece of string. ;) I think you need a fault code from the 'box first.
-
Are these recovered using the paperclip test or by other means?
-
No, you can't read the autobox with the paperclip.
-
So no ideas as to the seriousness of the fault then. As I dont possess a 'tech2' I'll go by hunch then. Will take a look at it over the next few days

Gearbox is going into limp. May be due to low fluid, but if its been driven like that for a while, its probably done further damage. I suspect a replacement box is reqd.
And 64k on a 10yr old car - Omegas are far too easy to clock :-/

Hi, been to look at car. There are receipts to show an accident repair at some time in its history, VIN plate for one in not present, although sticker on B-post & underfoor plate are present with no signs of tampering. Plenty of receipts to support history in invoices although service book has not been stamped annoyingly, one by a main agent.
Car is tidy overall. Needs Cam cover gasket & lip spoiler needs painting. Check starp on drivers door broken & missing.
At that point dubvious regarding Vin plate & came away to make further checks. Bloke said he bought car for number plate & VIC supports this. One query I though Miggy saloons had 27 in the Vin as a derivative code or has this changed, this one has 69.
Want to check prior to following up further. As bloke stated dries normal till its warm then will only drop into second about 2,000 rpm. 3rd & 4th normal. Previous owner said it had been doing it for 6 or so weeks & had hardly used car & replaced it.
Still worth a punt???

lack of vin plate has got to be a worry, personally i would walk away.
-
I am going to speak to the place of repair in the morning regarding that. Body shops can be careless when it comes to finishing details due tohem not being able to be refilled with a hammer or a self tapping screw. Main point of concern is what the derivative codes for a 98 3.0 elit auto saloon should be.
My 96 has 27 & would have though that this would still apply unless model year changes made it go to 69

Follow up. Done VIC check & all is clear. No history on there to get alarm bells ringing so to speak & recorded plate change backs up current owners reasons for buying it.
Drove it about this evening all fine until "automatic gearbox" came up on MID. Pulling off in D first was revs with going nowhere quick, felt like a badly slipping clutch. Second no better, 3rd & 4th ok.
You have to use it in 1 & 2 to pull off then slip into D & its ok until it gets to pulling off again. Just a 5 or so mile drive & parked it up again.
Even with its questionable mileage it feels much stiffer suspension wise than my 96. Sat Nav & A/c function ok. Radio & CD ok. All other electrics ok apart from drivers seat warmer which is no bother to me really. Can be looked at later on. HID's function ok as well.
We have agreed on £900 which even allowing for a possible change of gearbox is not bad I feel. Will undoubtedly start with a fluid change & work from there based on feel when driving.
So all in all, if it ends up a bag of s**t I could always break it & use the good bits to keep my other one on the road or vice versa.
Some advice on a box change may be useful if anyone has done one, and are there any maintenance guides on how to do a fluid & filter change anywhere please?
Thank you
-
You seem to be taking on a big problem, parting with £900, and ending up with a car that you may have to break in the end! :o :o
Like other correspondents, I would simply walk away and find a good example without all the hassle and probably for the same money! :y
-
far too much money for a faulty car fella ! wouldnt want to pay no more than £350 to be honest and have bought elites for a lot less !! ::)

£900!!!!! :o :o

Jaime - bought mine (the one u saw) at 9 years old with 64k - have all mots to confirm this. The Estate (98 R plate) was bought with 72K on it (again backed up by mots).

Gotta agree with others 900 notes a lot for a motor thats not 100% Look around at prices for 98 Elites in good order.
-
Yeah £900 is way too much for a faulty car...what year and spec is it?
-
I paid £450 for mine with a dodgy box, but it has got LPG and £50 for a 2000 AR35. now I have an all singing all dancing, fully loaded 98 3.0 Elite ;D :) :P :y
-
I have not seen a reasonable mileage Elite for much under £1500. Done a nationwide search on autotrader & best had done about 120k. I have had high mileage cars in the past & will not touch another one with over 100k unless I see every service receipt. Been caught out by poorly maintained cars in the past, all Vauxhalls!
