Can anyone recommend a decent code reader to buy that is easy to use and can read and reset codes. I had to go to the Stealers with a misfire and EML showing. Nearly two hours later, two very bored children and £107 worse off they had replaced my spark plugs. If I had had a code reader it would have cost me £12.
Can you help?

As you have a 2.2 any ELM327 should read the engine ECU. :y
Have a look at the Gendan website for software that can support ELM327 readers and is slightly more tailored to Vauxhalls

Thanks, looks good. Have you used this yourself?

No I haven't but it does look good, there are other options:-
Cheapo £20ish eBay scanners that can read and clear some codes (you'll get your £20 back on the first read!)
Opelscanner but it is expensive for occasional use, though very comprehensive and able to read most ecu's on most GM cars from '87 onwards (Latest version supports the latest CAN-Bus equipped cars)
Highly recommended is to visit either TheBoy or MarksDTM who have the real deal Tech II and can offer the same Tech II service as your local dealer but with a great deal more knowledge! :y

On this particular occasion I needed the car fixed quickly, but I agree that a trip to Marks DTM in Nottingham would be the best option in the future if time permits.

Hi,
I have MaxScan GS500 very pleased with it. Completely self contained hand held unit.
Reads codes and tells you what they mean, (no having to look up tables) clears codes, reads live data stream, reads freeze frame data, displays O2 sensor readings.
IIRC £78.00

Roger,
Thanks for the link. I have tried it a couple of times but just get Nissan sponsored sites on Go Daddy.com. Am I missing something.
-
As you have a 2.2 could you try a little test?
Press both the brake pedal and throttle pedal to the floor and turn the ignition to position 2 (ie. not to start position - DO NOT START THE CAR!), if theory is correct the engine management light should either flash continuously or flash out a code.
Thanks :y

hi would vxl v6 know is the elm327 able to work on a 2000 2.0 16v or only on the 2.2

ELM 327 interface works on 2.2/2.6/3.2, I think some of the so called 'Multi Protocol' devices advertised can talk to earlier systems. TheBoy or MarksDTM would be able to advise you further.
2.0 (both versions) 2.5 and 3.0 can be paperclipped regardless of body style.

Passing info on from TheBoy who is currently unavailable (away investigating a production problem at the Stella Artois factory in Belgium) and he asked me to post the following on his behalf.
The ELM will not work on the 2.0 litre, unfortunately...
