Title: Blown head gasket?
Post by: xraykev on 09 May 2008, 23:42:14
Hi folks
Wonder if anyone has any ideas about a problem i've got with my Y reg 2.2L.  Everything points to Blown head gasket :'(  bad missfire, vanishing coolant, pressurised water hoses, petrol smell in coolant.  What I can't understand is that while I was trying to limp the poor old dear home in this condition, every now and again the missfire vanished and the engine burst into life with full power for about a half mile, then back to missfire, juddering and practically no power.  Question is how can the problem get temporarily better?  Garage aren't interested and just want to get on with changing the head gasket, won't even pressure test it, but I'm not keen on spending £600 if there may be sone other cause.

Sounds like the gasket's gone, its probably gone a bit like puff pastry where its failed and as it moves a bit power will pick up again.  Its not a hard job to do yourself if you are that way inclined.  I would suggest changing the timing belt and water pump at the same time especially if you are going to keep the car for a while <200 for all the bits and the odd tools that you will need.

Doing this job myself at the mo - parts about £60!

Sounds like HG to me - just change it before you do damage..

Defo head gasket!  The reason the  power comes back occasionally is because the temp lows down enough to give it power.  When it heats up again you lose the power.
