Haven't had chance (or the weather!) to look at this yet. However I did open the bonnet after shuffling the cars on driveway, and the steam is coming from around PAS/top rad hose area.
Already changed the top hose, what do you think I should check next?
-
Didn't I read somewhere that the bit of plastic the top hose connects to on the radiator is a tad fragile and can break easily, especially if jubilee clips are used and overtightend ??
Might be worth a look ??

It doesn't appear to be from the rad end of hose, but I'll check again :y
My worry is the HG has gone, like MaxV6's, and leaking on the exhaust, as the steam was present after just moving the cars about...

Want to rule out other possibilities first. I guess could be stat housing, seeing as it is that area. Bit scared of doing the stat, never done one on V6, and heard that it can be nasty.

I would go back to the topic of conversation of about a week ago. Remove the plenum and intake manifold then block / join the TB coolant pipes and pressurise the system cold to see if you can spot a leak.
Edited to say: I've had coolant leaks where they are much worse when cold than hot in the past. I suspect the rubber hoses / seals swell a bit when hot and become softer so the leak seals a little. Maybe this is why it was obvious when you shuffled the car around. A bit of pressure built up but the coolant wasn't hot enough to seal it again.
Kevin

Yup, thats the thing to do....

I reckon mines worse when cold.
Methinks I need to steal Marks modified cap to pressurise. Reckon he'd notice if I replaced it with a normal one ;D

Failing that, have you got an airline connector / hose that'll push onto one of the TB coolant hoses / barbs? Block the other one and job's a good'un (obviously watch the pressure, but wind it up gradually to 1bar max.). I suspect you'll notice the leak with much less pressure than that.

That could be an ideal if I can find a way of sealing it :y

Does sound to me to be the thermostat housing or transfer pipe TB not hard for a man with your Talent :y
-
okay.....That rover hose will be in mail Monday.
MV6 - take the plenum off and all gubbings stat, stat housing etc is not a hard job - biggest issue for me is seperting the pipe and stat housing.
This may show you root cause - and also let you have a look at oil cooler plate.
If it doesnt - well its one thing more ruled out.
-
Tried the pressure test thing (still with plenum on) by trying to plug on TB hose and pressurise other, but can't get a seal.
Have to see about getting some spare caps modified, and leave until then I think.
-
I know this sort of thing is frowned upon, but if you've tried all other (cheap) avenues), before replacing the HG, you could try K-seal or 'steel-seal' (just Google "head gasket repair seal"
I haven't tried them, but as the previous poster said - what have you got to lose (£10 -£29) . I do know that Barsleaks worked for me when I had water p***ing out of a radiator once.
-
I have a schrader valve I could lob in the post if you like - although a local tyre fitters would probably be able to give you an old one.
Cheers,
Kevin

Its being able to seal it I guess, but still keeping pressure release valve in the cap :-[
-
Due to being late to meet Mrs TheBoy yesterday, the MV6 had a good exercising from Brackley to the SE side of Milton Keynes.
At :-X mph, temp gauge = 90C, shooting up to 96C in traffic (fans then control), then back down to 90C once back up to speed.
Is the stat probably not fully closing? Is it worth getting a stat, so once I've acquired a cap to pressurise the coolant to look for leaks, take plenum off and replace stat anyway?
Seeing as I had a hell of a job getting toop rad hose off transfer pipe, can I expect hassle getting the trasfer pipe off stat housing?
-
Was the coolant level low? Could be that it had a bit of an airlock under the stat, thus causing it to open a bit late?
I'd still say try to pressurise it, but might be worth removing the plenum anyway and having a look. It has been leaking for some time so I would expect some evidence to be visible.
If you're removing the stat housing, it would be silly not to replace it and the stat, especially as you may have to muller it to get it out by all accounts...

Coolant never allowed to go so low that the bottle completely empties.
My question was, when I take the plenum off when I can do the pressure test, should I change the stat anyway?
-
May as well if its an unknown.
If your getting the stat and housing from Vx you will need new bolts as the new housings are thinner than the original and the bolts will bottom out, or you can cut the old ones down >:(

Made up an expansion cap out of one of the many old ones I have (though it didn't work too well, so I've put a load of sealant in the cap to stop the cap leaking). Aimed for about 12PSI, but couldn't maintain it as the modified cap kept leaking.
Can't investigate further for now, as its raining again (as it has been most of the day), and besides, need to wait for the sealant on the modified cap to go off.
Pictures of stat and as much of transfer pipe as I can get a camera near. Does it look like this is the area where I have a leak? I have steam from around PAS pump area intermittently, so was thinking stat area?

Would there not be some staining around the area? There doesn't seem to be any evidence of coolant loss around that area :-/

When I got a thermostat housing it didn't need new bolts....
I didn't need a transfer pipe either...
But you will need the 2 O rings Jaime that make the seal between the housing and transfer pipe :y

could be transfer pipe cracked near mounting from when you fitted top hose jaime ??? :-?

The mounting bracket? Looks in tact, but even if that snapped, would it cause leak?

Went out to play in the snow, pressurised up the coolant with a modified cap.
Getting about 1 drip pre sec of coolant (well it tastes sweet, and has the pinky/greeny tinge to it!) from the passenger side manifold to cat join bolt. Also seems to be drips forming around oil filter/crank sensor area, but not actually dripping. The car hasn't been started since Wednesday, so wouldn't be caused by airflow etc.

In the valley, I can't make up my mind if I have the tiniest weep from dowty washer (top right in pic below). The is dampness around rear cooler pipe to cooler, but this might be due to weep from dowty? Or possible both these are caused by melting snow dripping everywhere :-/
(http://theboy.omegaowners.com/oofpics/mv6/IMG_2492.JPG)
There is a slight dampness in the valley, but certainly not wet. Again, not sure if this is normal, or expected after 5 days of non use, and melting snow dripping everywhere?
-
This piccy shows where I think the leak may be coming from (red lines):
They is a gap between the little block and the manifold which I think is the wettest area. The blue line points to what looks like a stud of something, also wet. Can't see if its wet behind the lower manifold heat shield.
Is the blue line pointing to a broken stud?
-
Saying that, wondering if the majority of the coolant that is dripping is coming from above manifold area - ie, running along top of manifold, then down to where it can be seen dripping from :-/
-
looking at that 1 you have a manifold bolt sheared ! 2 you have some sort of leak in valley 3 dowty seals look suspect ! i think it dripping off manifold is just were it is finding its way down and dripping off deffo higher up that that jaime :(
-

Its jacked up nearside, so woulding valley leaks drip off drivers side?
-
If the water is running off the manifold it has to have come from higher up, maybe out of the valley, and dripped down.
The only place you're likely to get a coolant leak is from a head gasket or core plug (lower down than manifold) or the components in the valley. :-/
Is it possible that water has run down from the valley? Can't quite picture how far forward that spot is from the rear end of the valley. Is there any sign of damp running round or through the bell housing area? Can you get to either end of the valley and see if they are dry? If so, that eliminates the valley components.
I guess a head gasket could drip onto the downpipe flange but further up the manifold it should be dry.
I think my next step would be to check for water exiting the rear of the valley somehow. Try and eliminate that or use a rag to take out any slight leakage and see if you still get water running down the exhaust manifold.
Kevin
-
I have to say that the whole of the valley area looks a bit shitty.....
-
Hi,
There cannot be many places to check now !!
Although the valley area components look a bit naff, there arn't any leaks showing that would produce 1 drip per sec. I agree that jacked up N/S would make anything run down to drivers side area.
However, considering the slope of the cylinder head, I reckon you have to check around the area where the transfer pipe goes into the thermostat housing, but I must admit I would expect any leak to run along the underside of the transfer pipe and show where the rubber hose fits on.
Other than that, I think you have to get the heat shield off to see if the HG is leaking manifold side, and it is running along the top of the manifold.

I have to say that the whole of the valley area looks a bit naffty.....
The photo makes it look wetter than it actually is - just general grime. Defo a small weep from coolant bridge on drivers bank. Nowhere near enough to account for the drips underneath.
I guess the cooler plate right at back could be leak more than I can see, but the angle the car was at wouldn't let it drip where it did?
Next stage to reseal the cooler plate (will I need a new cooler?), and coolant bridge? Should I replace stat or just reseal? What about doing the transfer pipe that is around the back of the engine (how?)

Only sign of leak on bellhousing is where it has dripped from area shown in photo, which is what makes me think its not valley?
-
Hi,
If you havn't had problems with cooling temp control, then don't change the thermostat, just fit a new seal ring. You will have to remove the transfer pipe to remove the thermostat anyway, so will need new seal rings for this as well.
The thermostat / transfer pipe job is not as bad as all that. Granted access is restricted and awkward, but its not hard to do.
They can be a sod if the transfer pipe is siezed into the thermostat housing. You are then looking at grinding or drilling into the thermostat housing to split it to get the pipe out.
BUT. If all goes well it really is no more than getting the bolt out that holds the transfer pipe, turning the pipe anti/clock (to get the lug from behind the oil dipstick pipe) with Mole grips or Stilson, and pulling out.
It's getting the dammn thing back and the bolt in that's the most trouble.
Yes reseal the cooler plate and bridge while you have it all accessible, but I would re pressurize and be really sure where the leak is before I started doing all that.
Pack loads of absorbant paper round where you think it may be on the cooler plate, and see if it stops dripping from aroung the manifold.

I'm having flashbacks of my car when reading this post boy. I had a leak on my Omega, bugger to find. It wasn't loosing as much as your one but you could take a look at my post
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1203346440/15#15
Managed to fix it by replacing the thermostat, coolant was leaking from around the edges of the thermostate housing. There's a channel where the coolant can travel down the front of the engine near where the exhaust manifold is. You can see it on the pictures in my previous post, underneath the pipe.
-
Paper towel around stat, stuffed in under top rad hose to transfer pipe, stuff behind V, and stuffed between plate and heads all stay dry when pressurised, and leak still dripping.
-
Hi,
I am as flummoxed as much as I am sure you are.
I can't think of any joint on that area of the cyl head to leak that would leak onto the top of the manifold, let alone run along the top of it. A leak on HG joint would seep out below the manifold.
Does anyone know if any of the manifold fixing studs go through into the water jacket of the cyl head ?? I don't remember seeing any core plugs or holes blanked off anywhere on the cyl head.
Looks like you have to get to remove the heatshield to see above the manifold properly, preferably while you can still pressurise the system and before before getting drastic like taking cyl head off.
Don't do any major strip down untill you have located this leak. I remember many years ago (40 at least!!) thinking it was just a HG leaking, and would be fixed with new HG, meticulously refurbished engine bottom and top end, but to no avail, got it going again and found it was a minute crack in cyl head that was the leak.

If you do find a leaky stud and can get to it you might be able to remove the stud and fit a new one with some thread sealant without removing the manifold. If it's leaking it's unlikely to be siezed, I'd have thought. :-/

Does anyone know if the studs go into water channel in head?
-
Hi,
I don't know, I just wondered.
I personally wouldn't have thought they did, but as one of the bolts on the thermostat cover does, I suppose anything is possible.
I can't think of his name, or find the thread, but it's the chap who put the video of the factory making the v 6 engines, the one that starts with the car speeding accross the desert !!
Wonder if he might know ?

I know what your going though mate i've had a coolent leak for about so long i can remeber i have had it at the garage twice and still no idea it has got worse over time but i just keep topping up.
I am going to have to take the top off and see what i can see but it sound's like were having the same problem only yours is loosing at a quicker rate i have changed the heater by pass but its just doing the same thing.
If you manage to find out what it is please please let me know.
Good luck and sorry i car'nt be of any help.

I was just beginning to build a theory about 1998 HG. You've knackered that theory now ;D
-
You know Jaime thinking about this it COULD be HG but I'd expect it to get slowly worse, this seems like the start of a rotten gasket.
Seems too high for a core plug if there is one.
Next paper test lay it along the head/block join and also by each stud - I think this will find the area.

hi there just to let you know the exhaust studs dont go into the water jacket as standard, but i have known of engineers drilling out broken studs, drilling to far into the head and going in to the water jacket >:(
i've done about a dozen or more heads on v6 engines and its quite rare for the gaskets to fail by them selfs (normal to over heat and warp the heads) its very common for the oil cooler plate to corrode and leak as there is no gasket here just grey sealer or the bridge seals to leak. hope this is helpful for you

Already checked cooler plate, maybe tiniest weep, but main leak is corner of engine, just below exhaust manifold

Yup, now more watertight than a ducks backside.
The HG didn't look to be in bad condition, which left me concerned it wasn't the issue, but it certainly is resolved now :D

I am sure it wasn;t the issue......given the signs of leaking around the stat, cooler plate, water pump etc..

When pressured up, the leaks around stat and cooler plate were virtually non existent. Very small weep around shagged dowty. But nothing to explain the 1 - 2 drips per second from that back corner.
So, must have been something in that area - you said core plug was looking OK, so had to be HG, unless there is a problem with head allowing coolant to weep out from, for eg, exhaust stud? Have to looked at heads yet?
