Title: Flushing out the oil from the water
Post by: bibbot on 17 May 2008, 14:00:10
hi all im just about to do a oil cooler and will need to flush the water out .
I was thinking about putting the hose pipe on to the radiator and flowing water through the top pipe then the bottom pipe and adding a small amount of detergient.
The flow will come out the filler pipe  I wos thinking that i would do it with the thermostat in to flush the heater matrix ,then take it out to flush the engine .
eny comments  would be appreciated.

thank :)

I think you've pretty much there. Just remember make sure the detergent you are using is non foaming and you get it all out. I've seen the effects of washing up liquid in the water before. You get really ticked off after it boils over about ten times. I would if it was me once it was all back together put a rad flush in then rinse through with the hose again drain as much as you can down then fill with deionized water and fresh anti freeze

However you do it, you will be flushing for weeks when you're done to get all the oil out....

I removed my rad and left it overnight with Fernox in it then I flushed the system with a couple of bottles of Forte but as TB says it can take weeks of flushing to get it clear.

Hi,
Mate of mine at work used to have an Omega long before me.(about 97) He had oil cooler leak and had to clean out system.

I know it sounds a lot of hassle, but he rigged up an electric circulating pump and hoses connected into bottom rad hose and onto the metal pipe that goes to the back of the engine, flowing in and out of a galvanised bucket with a Calor gas boiling ring to heat the water, and used dishwasher detergent tablets. Just kept changing the water when it got dirty. Flushed the system same way.

I don't know how long it took, and I don't remember him saying so, but he must have removed the thermostat or he couln't have got circulation.

Probably simpler and just as effective to use the Forte degreaser, but there are other ways !!

I have heard stories of 'Gunk' being used to flush out rads,

I've used Swarfega before without problems. Doesn't foam up and flushes out ok. God knows what it does to the rest of your engine though!
