Title: Slow Idle?
Post by: PhilP on 19 May 2008, 06:31:25
'94 Omega TD Estate

What's the correct idle speed for the BMW 2.5 TD Engine? The current reading is showing circa 650 rpm. Everytime I put the AirCon on or turn the steering hard over when the car is stationary, and in drive, the engine stalls.

How will I get the RPM increased?

Thanks

650 rpm would seem about right, however i will confess i am not a tractor expert, no doubt one of those will be along soon

The RPM sounds about right

This might strange, could the problem be due to the alternator trying to charge the battery?  The battery I have on the car is not the correct one, if it constantly needing to charge this would load the engine every 20-30 seconds?  :-/

Liz - no  - the 2.5TD Omega uses the straight 6 BMW engine.

All petrol Omega's are GM... so you're safe!

The French have got their fingers everywhere as well, Lizzie...the latest BMW MINI has a Citroen engine and all Ford TDCi engines are actually Peugeot/Citroen units built by Ford under license...

It can't be that bad a 6-pot diesel - it can be found under the bonnet of Range Rovers as well...

And has exactly the same issues in that as well ;)

Given the scares over GM products, is it REALLY safe to drive a miggy now ??

Drove one of those BMW TD-engined Range Rovers back when they were new - slowest car I've ever had the misfortune to get behind the wheel of, it was so underpowered it wasn't even funny  >:(

Surely better than the old 200TDi ones?

Wasn't the RR one detuned like the Omega one?

I have to say that my Omega (BMW) TD is fantasic, loads of torque and very responsive.  Leaves many boy racers behind in sport mode  :)

Still no thoughts about the idle problem then?

Never drove one of those, but the next day did drive a Discovery with the then-new 5 cylinder "Storm" TD, and that was a darn sight more sprightly, helped by more torque.
