Title: Glovebox is broke
Post by: Arrolman on 14 March 2007, 18:02:46
The handle to open it to be exact, girlfriend decided to pack it full of CD's which jammed the lock, so she pulled it instaed of pushing up and giving it a gentle tug, so now the handle moves but the lock levers don't :'(

Best way to fix? Tried to seperate the glovebox felt but can't get it off, im presuming its a spring or a clip that broke, but how do I get in to it?

Cheers,
Iain

Hi Mate,

Mine is the same. Is yours a facelift with a lever/handle that pulls down to open?

If so, use a small screwdriver to remove the hinge pins which hold the handle and lock in place. Once the pins are out the lock and handle can be removed as one unit. Stick your finger in the hole where the lock came out and you will feel a little square button that you can push down to open the glove box - be careful cos it usually opens sharpish trapping said finger still in the hole!

Good luck!

Dave

Hi,

Mine is a pre facelift model, I can still open the glovebox by pulling one side out then the other, I need to know how to get the lock assembly out to fix it.

Cheers,
Iain

It will be the plastic catch probably thats broken - about a fiver from a dealer.

To get the glovebox door off though, I seem to recall that you have to remove entire glovebox...

yes the entire box has to come out, fairly simple to do,watch out for the screw next to the airbag though..
once its out it can be totally stripped down to replace broken bits
different story getting it back in though... bas%$£d of a job...

This is the first job I ever did on mine, you can push the side bits in that catch to the glove box to hold it in, undo a couple of screws and pull the felt tray up enough to get the old mechanism out..

If you want to change the locking barrell into the new lock you get, be VERY careful as you pull it out, otherwise the locking bits and springs fly out everywhere, and it takes a long time to get them back in again!

Can be done, just be careful!!

I thought I'd add my bit too...
I had the same problem. When I eventually managed to prise open the glovebox and get inside the mechanism, it turned out to be a deforming plastic framework that provides the springyness (that's the technical word for it). Anyway, mine had broken at one of the hingine points. An hour with a soldering iron (for plastic welding) and a Coke can (to reinforce the hinge) and all was well again.

I was a pain in the bum to do though...Good luck. ::)

Hi all

Digging up an old topic, my glove box button/latch (or whatever it should be) has been missing since I had the car. So I basically have a hole in the glove box door, to open it I have to reach finger in, press down on square tab etc.

As I've never seen it I need to know what should be there in total, and can I order it? I read on this post about a barrel too, do they all lock with the car key? If so how do I go about getting a new lock assembly, even if it doesn't lock with my key?

Cheers

Phil
