Hi all
I recently posted about a ticking sound and poor performance, due to a crack in the rocker cover losing oil.
Saturday the car spluttered and choked to the garage (when I could get enough revs to move the thing) after a banging and ticking extravaganza the previous night on a short 2 mile hop. My mechanic (who is very good/reasonable/honest) confirmed spark plug 4 well was oiled up (replacement rocker cover needed). He cleaned it out, replaced the plug (checked all 4 wells), getting me back firing on 4 cylinders, but the ticking/knocking I thought was a misfire still remains.
He then said 'how long do you plan on keeping this for again?' and 'I think your engines knackered, sounds a bit camshafty'... :o
My question is could it be the sensor rather than anything more? I can post a soundclip if anyone wants to hear it and pass a verdict.
That coupled with my unsolved gearbox problem are putting me off keeping this and/or getting another miggy but I want to be proved wrong!
Car: S reg 2.0 16v CDX saloon, 70k miles (recent cambelt/breather change ~1000 miles ago)
PS How easy/expensive is a gearbox filter change? I just read it solved someones problems..

Sorry to start with basics, is your oil 10/40 semi synth, is the level ok, and is the oil recent?
-
Yep on all counts sir. Was recently low on oil but I topped it up only the other day. I will double check though in the morning. 99.9% its 10/40 semi synthetic.
Oh and incidentally my engine management light comes on sometimes with a noticeable difference in power (not much but also a bit noisier, like extra hum from the revs). Strangely it wasn't on last time I started it up even though it sounded like a bag o spanners :-[

You lose power when the engine light comes on because it automatically sends the car into a LOS (Limited Operation Strategy) mode to protect the engine and keep it running. You have to read the code the engine light has brought up. Search "paperclip test" in the the forum and there will be a guide showing you how to flash the code. I suspect you'll probably have a knock sensor code in there.

Cool thanks.
