Tomorrow morning I've got my car booked in with my local garage for two hours with the intention of changing the ATF. They usually do not touch automatic gearboxes at all, but recently I've built a bit of a relationship with them and they're willing to help out. I did have a go myself with the car propped up on some axle stands, but couldnt get the level bolt out - o/c there's not all that much manuevering room under there, so hoping to have better luck with the car up on a lift :)
Having read through all the various posts I could find on this topic I've bought the Dex III (got about 9 litres left - did another car before mine), filter, and two gaskets. (I do wonder if I should have just bought a drain plug - they're not stock items :-/)
From what I gather the procedure basically goes like;
0. Remove level/drain plug
1. Drop both sumps
2. Wait for all the old fluid to drain out, select through gears without engine running to try and get that last little bit out :)
3. Fit new filter and gaskets
4. Refit both sumps
5. Fill with fluid until it overflows out of drain plug
6. Start car and select through each gear (well, R, N,1,2, 3rd, and D - I guess 4th misses out for now :P).
7. Check level again
8. Refit drain plug
9. Test drive
10. Check level again
11. Party!
Does that seem like a good way to go, and does anyone know the correct torque values for the sump screws and the level/drain plug?
Thanks!

Proc seems fine, torque settings in book of lies :)
-
I'd guess on about 8 or 10nm - but look it up :)
-
seem to remember 50 for plug - same as oil sump plug, 15 for bolts

50 :o
rather hell :o
Hope the gearbox sump is stronger than the monkey metal BMW engine sumps which tend to strip at 25 ime...
-
12Nm for the sump pan bolts
33Nm for the level plug
20Nm for the filter (or fluid screen as its referred)

Thanks everyone - much appreciated! Providing the level plug comes out ok it should be a (fairly) straightforward job!
As for re-fillling with new fluid, someone (sorry, can't remember!) here suggested to use a funnel attached to a hose run up through the engine bay. O/c that doesn't help you determine when to stop filling, as the hose will fill up before you can get no more in...

I reckon an old Killaspray full of ATF with the spray nozzle removed is better. :y

Or a 1l bottle of DIII which will have a little tube on it to help get it in. Or Marks_DTM method involving a brake pressure bleeding kit....

Yup, easi bleed with a longer dip tube connected to the 5 litre tub of fluid......apply air and stand back and watch!

Look what aldi are flogging from this Thursday.
clicky (http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/58_6010.htm)
Cheaper than an eezybleed too.

Exactly what I've got, except mine's green. Even has a little pressure gauge on it. 8-). I'm thinking of fitting an air coupling on mine so I don't have to pump it up.

With this method you will only replace half the fliud in the system as the rest will still be in the torque converter, cooler and pipes. Total from dry 8.4 litres, 4.4 litres after removing main sump.

All done! The seal was a big of an arse to get off - completely baked on. The oil was not in the greatest shape to say the least, and there was a fair amount of crud around the magnet at the bottom of the main sump - how cool an idea is that magnet though! Swapped out a total of about six litres by removing both sumps and the pipe on the side of the box (didnt pay too much attention to whether it is intake or return :P).
Parts used were bought from JPAT as follows;
N209 27 01 FILTER, FM 4L30E, AR25, VAUXHALL 44mm @ £21.01
N209 25 02 REAR PAN GASKET, GM 4L30E, VAUXHALL ONLY @ £5.10
N209 25 01 FRONT PAN GASKET, GM 4L30E, BMW, VAUXHALL @ £3.76
Prices are exc. VAT and P&P.
10 litres Dex III ATF - honestly can't remember the price - £30 or so.
Made a heck of a difference in the smoothness and crispness (if that makes sense) of gear changes. MPG is back up from about 28/30mpg to 36ish on a round trip Sheffield to London, getting up to 38mpg again when cruising on the flat. ;D all round really! Just tempted to do it again now to flush that last bit out..

oh and the pressure sprayer from Aldi is a fantastic idea btw! The garage had an oil pump which we used, but I'll be getting a sprayer from Aldi - can't complain for under a tenner!

Is there a way to do a full ATF renewal and get all the old fluid out of the system before refilling with out taking the box off??
-
From what I gather, the couple litres or so that remain in the system after removing both sumps are in the torque converter and the oil cooler. You could get the oil out of the cooler by removing the pipes connecting to it and draining the fluid out of it (not sure how much of a pita that is), but the torque converter is a little more difficult - short of flushing that under pressure I guess it would have to be physically removed? Not (yet) my area of expertise, but I'm sure that will come as necessity with time... P

Mine really needs doing, but my local Vx garage (in Slough) told me that Vx don't recommend Dex3 anymore, - and sold me lots of Dex2. Haven't looked at the job yet, apart from lifting one side of the beast and deciding that there's NO WAY I can get under there & get to the bits!
All this & petrol getting to £5 / gallon.............Anyone want a 1999 3.0 Elite on 84000 miles....................?

Take the Dex 2 back & get a refund or swap it for Dex 3, they're wrong.

Your Vauxhall garage needs reporting to Luton Tech Department.
At the time of the first Omega, early 90's, only Dexron 2 was available, later, I think early 2000, Dexron 3 was launched and Vauxhall Luton upraded there manuals to "Omega type 25 and 35 auto gearbox fluid - Dexron III (3)".
