Could be a whole world of problems, walk away, unless its dirt cheap and your fixing as a project.

I had the same tapping sound when i got my elite.  Only when cold, quietened down when warmed up (couldn't hear after about 2 minutes).
Couple of oil/filter changes completely cured this.

If noise still there when hot agree with Tunnie - walk away.

As Tunnie suggested -- could be wiser to walk away. Mine has an incurable tap --- beaten more than one body having a go at it !!!! Going to be an engine swap! Luckily I happen to have one spare !!!!

Risks ...

Cheapest option ... a couple of oil/filter changes fix it .. cost = £20

Expensive option ... valves have touched pistons due to past problem, valves/head damaged, pistons/block damaged cost = new engine + labour

and any other option in between .....

.......  I'd walk .. but the choice, and risk, is yours ...

Possible but should stop as engine warms up.

If seller thinks thats what it is - get him to have it fixed for u before you buy! :y

are you buying this as a project to make money? If so buy, pay no more than £700.

If you are buying as a car because you need on, and have no real mechanical skills and would need a garage to fix it, WALK AWAY FROM IT.

How much is it advertised for?

You want to be paying around half that!

£800 would get you pre-facelift Elite in full running order.

Too much for a car with serious issues (if the fault was easily fixed cheaply, seller would do it ;)).

100% agreement  :)

Towed for 6 years with the 2.5 .... really, really good (1600Kg 'van) .. have now towed for 5 months with the 3.2 ... bloody fantastic .. :)

As an example .. the long drag up the M5 hill from Weston - Bristol, cruise in set at 60mph... .. the 2.5 did it .. but would drop to about 50-55, and the temp would just start to move by the top.. up about 3-4 degrees... the 3.2 stayed at 60 all the way and the temp needle didn't budge  :)
