Just got the rocker cover sorted on my 98 2.0 CDX saloon but the cars still running lumpy as hell, fine when moving, just stalling at the lights and struggling to stay alive when idle for a bit. I know its not oil in the spark plug wells now as its been sorted, so would you say its more than likely HT leads or DIS pack that need replacing, both, or other? Throttle body has been cleaned out with carb spray. Also tried Redex too for something to do, didn't do much though.
Any other suggestions also welcome, like cleaning stuff up. The engine has taken a serious glug of oil over the time its had a cracked cam cover, it was bloody everywhere rear of the cover right down to the gearbox and beyond. God only knows how long the crack had been there, it was 'repaired' with some sort of resin way before I bought it 3 or so months ago. Only had it and its relevant gaskets changed on Monday. Car always starts first time though, its just hard to keep it ticking over when stationary.
Who knows, I may have a completely normal working car soon at this rate, lol!!

You say you cleaned the IACV, have you cleaned out the breather system at the same time as you did the cam cover?? This can cause lumpy running and the oil leak could have gunged the system up...if you have then you want to start with the cheapest option first and check the spark plugs, then the leads then the dispack...may also be worth checking for air leaks...

Just to fill you in I'm a complete amateur at this, I had a Golf GTI Turbo before my mig and learned what I could on that. Cost me a fortune that bloody thing, pokey though.
Right then..I didn't remove the throttle body completely (like that amazing guide I just found in the howto's), I just cleaned what I could reach. This was all done when I first got the car too, a few months back now. Prob best to give it a thorough going over again, although I did ask the mechanic to specifically check all the breathers were clear whilst he was there, in case that started the problem in the first place.
Spose I'll get cracking on the elimination then!
Might be a daft question but like I say its a learning curve for me. How do I check for air leaks?

I noticed Chris said you had cleaned the Idle Control Valve but i couldn't see that in your thread so assume you haven't and this may be whats causing you rough idle problems.

No I haven't touched it nor did I know what one looked like, is this it?

Also can it be cleaned in situ, or will it require removal of the entire throttle body?

That looks like part of it but the picture below shows the whole thing, think it's best to remove it to clean it properly.

Yes, remove and clean the throttle body and idle valve and make sure all the drillings are clear.
Also check the small breather is connected to the throttle body (back side) and the carbon canister pipe is connected to the manifold just below it.

Your right, somehow I read throttle body as IACV! Indeed first place to look for poor idling would be Idle Air Control Valve IACV...best to take it off and soak it in carb cleaner etc...

You know, even though the throttle body needs doing I am still getting misfires, I know the difference from my Golf. HT leads first then? Where's cheapest/best to go and can I do this myself?
