Hi all,just bought an 97 omega 2.5V6.Car run's fine but was a little worried it is running hotter than normal.the temp gauge usually read's between 90 and 100.Had mechanic look at it and he say's it's fine but just wanted to hear from other owners what temperature their car's run at.
Greatful of any feedback

Welcome :)
Temp should be around midpoint on the gauge, which for prefacelift is 95C. So you should be cruising at around 93-95C, rising to 96/97C in traffic when fans give it some large and drag it back down.
100C is too hot...

Sounds high, shouldn't really go above 96/97 utter max.
May be worth flushing the coolant. I find Forte Cooling System Flush to be excellent for this.

May be worth flushing the coolant. I find Forte Cooling System Flush to be excellent for this.
Would this flush the rad too, a I have been told by a VERY reliable source that it may be a bit blocked??

It will help, but, to quote my dad, RIP, "you can't put a shine on a turd". If rad blocked, may be worth removing and using something harsh on it (bleach?) and thoroughly flush before refitting? Also when off, pour boiling water in it, look for cold spots, if any exist, its blocked.

I'm sure the explanations given are the most likely but just as an outside bet it might be worth checking that the earth lead to the battery is not deterorating. I had a problem where the joint between the copper strands of the cable and the terminal clamp had broken down. The symptoms of this were a high reading on the temp gauge (hovering around the red mark) when in fact it is actually normal. This is worse in hot weather (which leads you to believe it is real) because the fans are working hard blowing air into the cabin and the rad fans may be working hard as well because of the higer ambient. If you touch the thicker (brown) earth cable close to the terminal you may well find it is too hot to touch. This in my experience is a sure sign. The other way to check is to measure the voltage across the battery terminals. Can't remember what it should be (13.6?V) but someone here will know for sure. If it is much lower than this try pushing the -ve voltmeter probe through the insulation 3 or 4 inches away from the terminal in the thickest of the two cables and see if it is any higher. There shouldn't be any significant difference in the voltage when measured at the terminal and 3-4 inches down the cable.
If it has failed replacing the cable is a bit of a pain as it follows a tortuous route around the engine to a power steering bolt iirc. Around £30 as well!
