is replacing an ignition barrel just a simple plug and play procedure?

the barrel in the elite is fekt and needs replacing, but the key i have now has a red piece on the top and im wondering if its a chipped key and i would need a chipped key and barrel replacement.

You can change JUST the barrel without changing the housing, as long as you can get the key into position 1 for removal.

With the key in position one, insert some strong wire or a pin or simelar into the hole in the barrel housing, and with some wiggling the barrel will then come out.

To refit just pop the new one in there.

In terms of keys, put the transponder from the original key into the new one and hey presto - job done.

if you take the black switch off at the other end of the housing the bit thats missing should be still in the switch that you have took off.
just remove the electrical plug with 3 or 4 big wires then a small grub screw that you cannot get straight onto because of steering wheel holds the switch to the barrel housing.

probably quite a bit. take it you have not got a spare key.
you dont have to goto vauxhall though. quite a few local car key cutters can program them. just look in your yellow pages.
if not & its going to cost a fortune, maybe think about buying a second hand ecu with matching key chip
i have a 2.5 v6 auto 1998 ecu with two matching keys
not sure if this will fit any other models or manuals but it will be cheap if yu want to try it
