I've done a quick search and it looks like this is trouble! 24mm socket and bar on the lid and the base starts turning with it, now the base doesn't seem to want to go back in! I did the last oil change and was sure I didn't overtighten the lid but there we go. What can I do?

Ok, might be in slightly less of a panic now as it appears to have screwed back in. They do screw back in don't they.....?

Hi mate,
Same thing happened to mine last oil change. It did screw back in, but does seem to have a minor leak now.
When the complete unit is off, if you can separate the base from the top, I think the base can then be screwed back on from inside, before replacing filter/top cover.
I'm sure someone else can confirm....

Yep, mine screwed back in but got to a certain point and just kept turning. It's ok for now but needs sorting out in the next few thousand miles. I'm assuming that in trying to get the housing off I loosened the nut inside it that you can only get to by taking the lid off. It wouldn't let go of the housing completely but seems to have slackened off.
So my approach will be to try and hold the housing with a strap-type oil filter wrench whilst trying to undo the lid. It might just work because the lid really isn't that tight and it didn't take a whole lot of effort to turn the whole thing.
