Title: 2.5TD IN-TANK PUMP
Post by: Seth on 26 February 2008, 23:03:59
Does anyone know how to remove the in-tank fuel pump unit from the tank on a 2.5TD Estate?
I've removed the screw-cap on the top of the tank, but can't see how to remove the base portion of the actual pump assembly from the tank bottom.
Any ideas chaps? Someone must have changed one!

I have tried this myself and failed a couple of times. There appears to be some sort of clip but it never seems to be forthcoming... does anyone have aphoto of one out of the car to see how the clip works?

Have a look at the attached.

You need to release the clips shown

I changed my pump on my estate a few weeks ago Marks picture is spot on BUT bear in mind you have to release all three clips at the same time or the pump won't come out.
Keep a gentle tension on the cables that feed the pump when you release the clips it should then come out easily.

Thanks Mark,
I'll get 'er indoors to do some running-around, and when the tank's low on fuel, I'll follow your advice and get the pump unit out.
Will let you know how I get on - thanks again butty!

Make sure the pickup strainer is nice and clean before re-fitting!

I'll let you know how it all goes - once the good woman has used-up the fuel that's presently in the said tank. Thanks again mate!

Hi chaps,
Have released the clips and the pump unit begins to release from the tank.
Then it stops, being held-back by a small-bore clear pipe that appears to disappear into the bowels of the tank. There's a clip that holds a black plastic elbow, (which is connected to the said pipe), but even after removing this clip, the elbow refuses to release from the pump unit.
Anyone got any idea how to do this mother?

At last - got the pump and associated swirl-pot out today.
Thanks to Platty's excellent photos and encouragement it all released after a little fiddling around in the bowels of the tank ..... !
Sucked the tank dry and totally cleaned it and the swirl-pot/pump strainer - though not much crud found therein.
With the tank bone-dry, it is possible to remove the swirl-pot/pump as a single unit, then dismantle on the bench.
Reassembled, then gave it a good thrashing around the Valleys.
Guess what - still difficult to restart when hot, and still has slow pick-up on engine revs.
Must now be the injection pump - anyone got any further ideas?
