Title: 2.6 CDX Auto , will not start
Post by: gpalf on 18 June 2008, 16:02:40
Hi , new to this site and new to an Omega. Wanted one for years and now got one, but, here we go !!
52 2.6 cdx auto, got it 2 weeks ago, immaculate, 75000 miles. got it home after 35 miles oil light came on. Contacted the seller and he has put another engine in it, after finding that the crank was knacked. It has run for about another 50 miles without a hitch. I collect it and do about 20 miles in it and it cuts out. Initially I suspect running out of fuel because I passed the only 2 garages on my way home , out of fuel. I put in 5litres , turns over no fire. I get it home on the back of a truck put in another 5 litres thinking that it needs a little more to help, same , turns over but does not fire.  There is no smell of fuel, engine turns over no problem , the only thing I notice is that the immobiliser light does not illuminate when I turn the key.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated  :-/

When you first turn the ignition on, but without starting the engine what lights show initially ??? and then what lights go out ??

ABS on then off, air bags on then off, TC FLASHES  THEN STAYS ON, Brake system stays on, alternator stays on  oil stays on. this just when key is turned on , try to start and they stay on , I suppose because the engine has not started.

mmm so the EML light is not coming on at all ?? even before you try and start .. that is NOT good .. a common "con" is to remove the EML light so you can't see the faults its supposed to give ... :( I would consider checking /changing the EML bulb as a first thing .. or taking it back to the supplier and asking just what the **** is going on  !!

Without the EML working we/you can't read the fault codes .. which might just be a simple fix or something more serious.

With luck its a simple crank sensor problem .. but who knows right now .. :(

Stick your location in your profile, perhaps someone nearby has a code reader that can help

Sorry to sound dim , but by the EML , do you mean the immobilisor light ?. if you do then I am pretty sure that that it came on before the engine change and also 50% positive it came on after collecting it yesterday. But I was so thrilled getting it back and it all seemed great, The other 50% is kicking in !!

There are 2 lights you haven't described .. one of which you call the "immobilisor light" .. there is no such thing ... there should be the lights you describe AND on first switch on.. for a few seconds .. a light that looks a bit like a gearbox, which is the emissions light, and one which is a car  with a spanner sticking out of the roof !!

That one is the EML .. Engine Management Light.. it should come on for a few seconds and go out .. this indicates no faults, if it comes on then flashes continuously it is an immobilisor error, if it remains on steady it means a stored fault .. which is what we need to know.

If you are NOT getting this light on when you first switch on either the bulb has failed .. or been removed  ... :(

when the ignition is on do you get a picture of an engine?

Sorry guys just had tea,
According to my handbook the picture of the car with a spanner sticking out o the roof , is the immobilizer, and as I read it , it is also for the electronics.

As for the picture of a engine , this is no longer illuminated when ignition is on !!

Is there a fuel cut of switch on these ?, if so where is it ?

Without cranking the engine over ......

Is the light for the car+ spanner coming on with ignition for just a few seconds ?

Is the light for the engine shape coming on also for just a few seconds ?

There is no fuel cut off switch

Okies .. then you either have a MAJOR electronic problem, or the bulbs are blown/removed .. and I strongly suspect the latter...

There is a guide on bulb changing .. takes about 20 minutes, I would either

1. Take the car back to the supplier and tell him to sort it, looks like you may have ben sold a pup ...

2. Replace both bulbs and see what happens next, but the solutions to any "hidden" problems may get expensive ...  :(

Luckily it is under warranty, and the seller says he does not sell bad cars, it has cost him a fortune so far and if it cannot be sorted . i will ask for my money back. after all I have only driven home twice in it.
It has not put me off Omegas, I have wanted one for years but settled for big Rovers instead .

Update on my car ,
There is a earth fault blowing the 30 amp fuse in the engine bay, this obviously controls the engine management. Replaced it and she ran sweet as a nut , until the fuse went again.
I am putting my faith in the dealer ,he asures me that it will be right. He is amazed how calm I am, but that is me, what is the point of antagonising the situation, if it gets sorted then I have a mighty fine car. 8-)

Must be something pretty big to blow a 30 amp fuse .. so should be easy to find ... always nice to find out these rogue problems ...  once its fixed you'll love it ..  :y :y :y
