Title: rear wheel bearing

hello people my car just failed its mot on excess play in the near side rear wheel bearing ,my question is can the wheel bearing be adjusted or is it replace only ?i have not looked at it so i don,t no very much about it but the wheel bearing is making no noise but has a lot of play in it any info apprecated

In theory they are not adjustable.

Worth a quick check to make sure the hub nut is tight though as they are not that easy to change.

thanks mark will check that ,anyway what is involved in changing them are they pressed in ? what price are they at stealers ? or would pattern be ok, the car has only 52000 miles on it so hopefully it might just need the center nut tightened

hi i just removed the rear drum and caliper and can see no centre nut :o am i missing something or has the bit that the wheel bolts to have to come off first ? if so how as it seems to be pressed on any info appreciated

On the front of the hub is a metal round cover, pop that off and the nut is behind it.

youi mean the sort of light dust cap ? if so there is nothing behind it be a 1.5"-2" space , it has a sort of shape at both sides as if it is mean,t to be turned by a special tool or something  :-/

No, its me going scenial.....been working on to many font wheel drive cars!

You needs to pop the drive shaft off the back of the hub (6 bolts) and then you will see the hub nut......its a tight bugger, about 300Nm!

thanks for that i will have another look tomorrow and see if it is tight if not will get a new one in as it has huge amount of play` in it

just an update new bearing fitted yesterday so all is well again as for fitting and more important removing not what i would recommend to take on at the side of the house it is a fairly involving and time consuming job to say the least but got it sorted in the end :y
