Codes read would be the ideal staring point but, likely to be crank sensor.

Should still store it as a fault or at least live data would give an indication.

Unlike a 'missing' injector pump (i.e. when its unplugged) a crank sensor with poor signal will still possibly show the correct static values but no position signal will get through.

I assume the ecu light is not flashing indicating an immobiliser fault?

yes no ecu light, ihave 2 of these car cars black 2.0 dti estate 169,000
and a03 2.2dti elite both have only broken down when the crank end pully fell apart.i think some thing has gone in the injector pump or could the ecu stop it with out a fault light.

Consider this scenario......the engine is cranking and no crank signal is being seen (althought the static DC values still check out and hence no light on).........the ECU wont let the pump fire.

Hence why it needs the codes reading and the live data checking
