Title: Question - Can you/me over fill the header tank.

Hello again, had coolant leak problems some months ago, secondhand radiator solved the cracked plastic side tank, however since then I have watched the coolant level like a hawk (I know very sad), but if I fill the tank to above the level then check it the next day having covered 200 miles it's back down to the level, travel another 200miles and it's still on the level, the level then stays the same. So can the header tank be over filled, where does the excess go, can it be detrimental ?????  :-/ :-/

are you checking it when the engine's cooled down?

Yes -  pressure relief hole in top of filler cap allows excess pressure (and water/steam) to escape.

Thanks 'dbug' yes I understand but is the escape of excess air/steam worked out so the coolant stays at the correct level ? very clever if it does.

how long since you changed the rad? The system will self bleed i believe so are you sure its not just sorting itself out? It took 3 weeks or so for my old cdx to settle after a coolant change. Not aware of coolant system ejecting excessive coolant. But then i aint no expert.

Changed rad back in January, over 11,000 miles ago. Thanks for all your comments but it seems the coolant is leaking away somewhere, HBV changed some months ago and looks fine, hoses all look good, I think there is a leak from around the 'secondary thermostatic switch', will jack up the car the weekend and have a good look.
