Hoping someone can give me some advice.
I have read quite a bit about adding Cruise Control to Drive-by-Wire Omegas - I have a 99 2.5TD (last of old shape) which is Drive-by-Wire. It is my understanding that all is needed to install Cruse Control is the upgraded stalk (unlike on cable driven models). Then, when fitted, this may or may not worked straight away - if not a Tech2 will be needed to enable the cruise function on the ECU (although some will work without this as they are already enabled).
So..... today I purchased a brand new stalk from a Vauxhall dealers and proceeded to fit this (direct replacement) and found the extra cable that lays loose in the loom which also needs connecting. I then went for a drive and it did not work! So I went back to the dealers and managed to find a friendly vx technician who hooked up the Tech2 machine in an attempt to enable the cruise function. However, he was unable to find a menu allowing this to be carried out - apparently this should be under the 'new programming' section but did not appear. He then went through other menu's and was able to find a reference to cruise control and that with the ignition on it had a 4.7v feed, but nothing else.
I have several questions I need answering.
1. I was told by vx parts man that there are a few different cruise switches listed, but when cross referenced with my chassis no. the correct one was part no: 9181014 which I purchased and have installed. Is the diesel stalk different to petrol models? Could I have the wrong stalk?
2. When I installed the cruise stalk - I noticed that the extra 'cruise wires' from the stalk has 4 cables, however the multiblock on the car loom side only has 2 cables going into it. I'm quite sure this is the right one as the block connector fits perfectly together and I can't see any other loose connectors?
2. I was advised by the vx technician to check if the clutch switch was present which I have and can confirm it is present - how can I check if this is functioning correctly? Replacement is approx. £20 + VAT but I need to know if the one I have is functioning correctly first?
3. Does this procedure only work on face lifted Omegas - mine is the old shape but as it is the 2.5TD I know it is the Drive-by-Wire type and have been led to believe it will work on mine.
4. Does the Cruise function have a light that illuminates on the dash?
Sorry for all the questions but I would really appreciate some knowledgeable advice.

Thats the reason. Gormless brain dead dealer has sold you wrong stalk. 2.5TD takes the 2 wire cruise stalk. That should have been obvious on Tech2 if they knew how to use it.
It would appear that 2.5TD does not have option to be enabled - they all are enabled.

Clutch switch can be tested with Tech2, I would like to think that dealer knew how. Clearly stupid.
No light on dash.
How much was new stalk?

Thanks very much for your quick reply's. You are right about the standard of the vx technician - could tell he didn't really know how to use the Tech2 in detail - but to be fair he was doing it for me as a favour - I managed to speak to him in the car park - explained that I had just bought a new stalk from them and could he enable it for me (without the £40 odd pound associated charge)!
Anyway I think your comments seem logical regarding the the 2 and 4 wires - must admit I thought this didn't seem right. Don't suppose you know the part no. of the 2 wire stalk do you - would certainly help me out a lot? Dare say my clutch switch is fine then.
Stalk cost £41.78 inc VAT.

So, if I am reading your info correctly (apologies if I'm being thick) there are three different part no's (inc. the one I have - 9181014). The other two are 90460318 and 9181012. Any idea which of these two it will be? I think my engine is X25TD, but that doesn't help as they are both listed for this engine.
-
Hmmm, I posted that in a hurry last night without really looking (hence posting all of them for 2.5TD).
What is your engine number (should be on DLVA V5 logbook)?

Engine No. is 30829118.
Just having issues with Vauxhall dealer as they are saying that unless I know the exact part no. they are not willing to order as both of the other no's are not stocked by them. They are adamant that the one I have is listed for my car when quoting the reg no.
I think another possible way of ID'ing the stalk is from the id sticker on the underside of the stalk. The one I have is BM, the other two, 90460318 is AJ and 9181012 is BK.
Are you able to help any further in identifying the correct one?
-
Soz, only have same tools as dealer for identifying. Ask the dealer to call Vx Tech services to properly identify...
Don't suppose you are local to me?

No, I'm on outskirts of Manchester.
Do you reckon this will work with one of the other stalks listed?
FAO anyone who has done this to a 2.5TD
Could you have a look at the id sticker on the underside of your cruise stalk - there should be 2 letters which will probably be one of the following:
BM
AJ
BK
This would help me loads.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but 2.5TD cruise stalks are 2 wire, all others are 4 wire...

Right.....maybe getting somewhere! From your information there are three part numbers listed.
9181014 - this is the one I have = 4 wires, this is what vauxhall have listed against my car reg number, but doesn't work. Could the final number in this code - 4 - refer to number of wires?
90460318 - this part I'm now told by a different dealer is superseded by the next number.
9181012 - leaving this final one which I have now ordered for tomorrow. Again, could the final number in this code - 2 - refer to number of wires? Hopefully this one will work and presumably is the 2 wire one?
In answer to your comments, some TD's must have a 4 wire stalk (9181014) - although it doesn't work on mine - as this is listed against the 2.5TD alongside 9181012. Would be interesting to compare these part numbers with those listed against petrol models.

2.5TD stalk is 2 wire.....the standard stalks (i.e. petrol) are 4 wire as they have a supply line and 3 return lines, one for each switch.
The TD stalk works with a single wire thanks to the fact it has resistors in it so a different resistance is presented across the two wires depending on what switch you press.
NO 2.5TD ever used the 4 wire stalk....its simply an error on how the parts department is reading/interpretting the info.
The correct part number is 9181012 (as confirmed by my friendly and compitent parts manager)

Many, many thanks to both you and 'The Boy' :y for help in clarifying the correct part which I have now correctly ordered. It is unbelievable how what should be the simplest thing can cause so much confusion and hassle. Added to this, the ingnorance and incompetence of some vauxhall parts departments (and service departments come to think of it) leaves me in no wonder why vauxhall get slated for poor customer care by many. It's a shame because some of the dealers are quite good and cars are great in general.
Thanks again. I will post when I have the part to confirm that it works - should be here tomorrow.

Confirmation that I got the Cruise Stalk today - part no. 9181012 - and it does indeed work perfectly. This is indeed the 2 wire switch.
Massive thanks again to Marks DTM Calib and The Boy for excellent information. :y

I have just had the same painful experience.
They sent me the 9181014 part, which of course is the wrong one !
I wish I had seen this post before !
Anyway, I now have ordered the correct stalk.
Same car of course, 2.5 TD CD, 1996 vintage.
Cheers
