Title: What would you do?
Post by: SteveD on 09 July 2008, 10:52:33
The oil in my autobox has done 80k assuming it's never been changed before. I'm about to go on a long journey towing a pikey box. I can afford to stick some cheap Comma Dex 3 in but not the quality Castrol or Fuchs that I would normally use. I would be changing the oil again for better stuff in about 15k miles. I know the difference it makes to gear changes after changing it on my last Omega.

Would you bother putting the cheaper stuff in? My thinking is that at the end of the day it is made to the GM standard so should last a year.

Would you keep what's in there knowing it's done 80k but should be real Vauxhall Dex 3?

What is the price difference?? Do you have gear changing probs? It really is up to you. If it were me.... which it will be soon... having hear how messy it is I would only want to do it once! But I am a lazy bug :y

About £40 price difference. Gearchanges feel to have gone a little bit snatchy lately.  I don't mind doing it twice - got a pit so it's an easy job  ;)

I'm a great believer in you get what you pay for - £15 or £50+ for the oil doesn't sound right if they're supposed to meet the same specification.

I think the Vauxhall oil is about £50. I can get 7L of Comma for about £15.

7L? What is the capacity to be replaced? I only ask as it is on my list of 'to do'  :y

If you are going to the trouble and mess of doing the job,my advise would be do it properly with the correct sump gaskets and filter (£35=00 from ABS) then the best quality oil in the correct quantity.I did my recently as suspect it was original oil from new, gearbox has done 105k and can honestly say it is like driving a different car.Can hardly feel the gear changes either up or down even when hard acceleration.Well worth the cost,so I am sure your car deserves it,as if you are going to spend money again in 15k miles yyou might as well feel the full benefits for the cost difference now.

remember you need to replace the gasket(s) too (not sure if you could reuse them in 15k - big risk you'd need to change them again) - personally I don't see any value in doing it twice so soon.

I'm sure the oilman chap on here does the Fuchs stuff for much less than 50 quid... :-/

Yes, empty both by removing, refit both and fill through level plug, once full top up with engine running, and selecting all gears.
Recheck after a few hundred miles.

its easy enough, but potentially very messy ::)
Worst bit for me was keeping the filler hose off the hot exhaust while swmbo poured fluid down it.

got to do the filling with the car level as well.

To be honest, it easy, just messy and awkward.

Shed load of bolts to undo.
full sumps to empty, i found leaving some bolts partially in so i could 'swill' the old fluid out was a good start.
3 bolts to change the filter if changing.
then the worst bit is cleaning the old gaskets off from under the car, and the sumps, thats the messiest bit.
Then bolt the sumps back on with new gaskets, refill,
start engine and fill some more, select all gears, fill some more, get car level with plug out to drain any excess, refit plug, drive, car up, engine running, refill, car down with engine still running to drop any excess, car up, plug in, job done.

Then recheck after a few hundred miles.

good way to fill is a big syringe, or garden power sprayer filled with atf

Sounds a lot worse than it is.
