Title: my poor Omega
Post by: garry on 12 July 2008, 21:59:30
Hi folks,
looking for a bit of advice on the best way forward, heres my sob story........ Ive got a 2.5 V6 Auto Estate, its R reg which makes it a 97 i think. just over 100k.

I really love this car, its so comfy to drive, smooth engine, can honestly say the best car ive ever had....until christmas day last year, going up a hill and suddenly power was slipping away, appeared to be some sort of problem with gearbox.

cos it had happened on a hill, i thought maybe the transmission fluid needed topped up. went to a garage, they checked the level, and it was a little low. this was topped up but the problem kept happening occasionally, slow to pull away, and struggling on hills.

As the car was only worth about £800, i didnt want to pay a transmission specialist in glasgow big money to check out the gearbox, only to need a new one (more big bucks), so i got a working gearbox (& matching torque convertor) from a breakers ( was definately working when donor car brought in, and was about 20000 miles younger!) got a local mechanic
to fit it.

suprise surprise, didnt make any difference - seems its not a gearbox problem!  :'( felt like crying at the garage as im so very skint, didnt need this problem! maybe something electrical. is the real problem.

By this point i was desperately needing a car for work, so bought a run-around, and the Omega has sat in my drive for 5 months, had to SORN it, its really depressing me now. I have the first gearbox as well, in the boot.

If you are still reading !?, what should i do, try and sell as spares / repair, or scrap it? i dont really have the time to break it. it would really depress me to scrap it as its a really great car, with two gearboxes! would rather see it go to someone who could get use out of it, but is anyone likely to buy it???

sorry for the long email - would appreciate any advice.

Hi Garry

The first thing I would do is t a paperclip test and post up the results

only 1 thing to do mate. Fix it. Yourself i mean. Some very clever/helpfull people on here, i would make use of them if i where you. Gearbox can be upset by engine issues, i have read. Read codes is good start, note tho, p clip test only reads engine ecu, not gearbox ecu. Tech 2 for that. But i bet an engine code comes up. Worth a look on page 1 of maintenance guide.  Paper clip test explained on there. Costs nothing to look.:y

ok i have went out for a look - nothing at all coming up at all when the key is turned... thought maybe the battery needed a boost after 5 months  sitting in the drive -will give it a charge up and see if that works, will post up any results i get.

thanks for the tip  :y
