Title: New discs are running hot - is this normal?
Post by: colin951 on 13 July 2008, 22:26:05
Newly fitted front discs are running hot!
I have a 1999 v6 Elite and have just changed the pads and discs. To what extent should the new pads drag against the new discs I have just fitted? The sliders were moving smoothly, the calipers returned to their 'in' position without too much trouble. The discs are hot to the touch (no braking applied - just driving). Should I dismantle and clean th ecaliper internals?

there should be no drag what so ever.

Jack the front up, can you freely rotate the front wheels?

My wheels do NOT spin freely. You can hear the pads dragging on the discs (both front wheels). I can maybe get the wheel to spin one rotation if I spin hard enough!
If my caplipers are sticking (& I suspect them more than the sliders) can I dismantle them and clean them? Will I need a new set of rubber selas? Or should I just buy some new ones?

if your friendly with your parts man, they sometimes let you buy common parts  and take back what you dont need. Worth servicing the breaks by the sound of it. Check sliders first,(they should move nice and freely) as you dont want to to have get the piston out if you dont have to. Hope helps.

Ps sliders on the calipers. They centre the caliper on the disc, if they stick the piston will push against the slider instead of the disc and as the pads wear the disc will no longer be centred and then rub on one side.

Sounds like they are, you should be able to spin the front wheels (when jacked up) with your little finger!

When you replaced them, did you bleed the old fluid from the caliper?

If not clamp (carefully) the brake fluid line, and pump the caliper clear, thats where the bad fluid is.

I had the same problem with my ones, after 2 new sets of discs and pads I bought some new calipers. I'm in the process of replacing my rear ones as well, the drag is an understatement to say the least, really bad with crappy MPG  :'(
