Hi, Neil, and welcome to the site.
You need to fill in your profile, underneath your name to the left,
with your car details. (Year, engine size, auto/manual).
Different models have different fixes.
Fill it in, and the folks on here will give you a list of stuff
to check and report back on, that will be applicable to your
model. :y

if its an auto, your idle air control valve (ICV or IACV) will need a good flushing out with carb cleaner, this should cure it
have your breathers and throttle body cleaned out too, all helps

Hi Neil, I see you've updated your profile to a 2.0L 'W' Reg.
This will probably mean that your breathers are blocked,
and this is oiling up your Idle Air Control Valve (IACV).
To make sure you have no sensor problems, first carry out
a paperclip test iaw the following link. Ensure that your EML
light works before carrying out the test.

On a 'W' reg, I would expect 4 digit codes, not 2 digit.
10 flashes = 0 (Zero).
Post up any codes you get.
Read the following links and clean your breathers, breather jet,
and IACV. The Breather Jet is very important. If it's blocked,
it's pointless cleaning anything else until you've cleared it, or
everything will just oil and block up again in pretty short order.
