Title: droppping oil from somewhere
Post by: Tresvant on 22 July 2008, 13:32:28
Hi,
hope you someone can point me in the right direction. Firslty i know nothing about cars, engines or anything mechanical so any help you can give has to be simple enough for an idiot like me to understand.
I only bought the car at the weekend and i hope i have not bought a dud. It would appear that i am dropping oil from somewhere as i look in the top of the engine i can see now oil leaks anywhere but at the bottom there appears to be like a shelf kinda thing that has a fair bit of oil on it, where would this oil likely to have come from. Also the car has 65000 on the clock but has not been serviced since 51000 which according to the book was 3 years ago so not much travelling done in this thing. i'm paranoid that its going to be something severe which would lead to my missus killing me for buying this car.

sorry i cant be more specific but i really am retarded when talking about cars.

thanks in anticipation

steve

If oil is at top part of engine then my money will be on the cam cover gaskets ;)

Easy check is to pull off 1 of the plug leads (easiest side is drivers)pull the lead out off plug and then see if you have any traces of oil on plug lead or in plug well.If so your cam covers have blown and you will need to replace both sides with new gaskets/seals and sealant..excellent "how to in maintenance guide"The engine breathers should also be totally cleaned as it would seem servicing on your new car has been neglected and root problems with all megas is poor servicing .Once those bits have been sorted you will have a good reliable car.

Its Definately not on the top part of the engine, coming from the bottom. If i was to buy one of the cam cover kits from the forum shop does that include everything i need ( except tools)? Look at the guide and you may laugh but its seems like a tricky job to me, how badly could i cock it up??

thanks

best thing you could do here is to find out what's leaking before you start replacing stuff.  It could be a careless topping up of oil by the previous owner, could be leaking oil filter, who knows.  The golden rule is identify the problem then fix it (BTW I'm not knocking the previous suggestion of cam cover gaskets, just that you need to be sure before you change them)

I'd try to clean as much off as I could using engine de-greaser (be careful of the electrics, then see where it is emerging from.

oh BTW if it has not been serviced for 3 years: do it now: oil + filter change.  (get a trade club card from autobahnstormers.org) which is well worth the saving on VX prices
