Title: Can't get new Cambelt back on!!!
Post by: Brian T on 27 July 2008, 12:39:27
Urgent help needed guys, currently have Cambel off and am unable to get new one back on. Timing marks are all in the right place but belt won't go on without moving the bottom timing mark. It always wants to be a toot or 2 either side.
It's a 2.2 4 pot and the new belt is a contitech the water pump is QH

Any advice?

Remember you have to move the pulley directly above the crankshaft pulley with a wrench to get you enough give to get the belt back on.  That's how you got the belt off surely???

Old belt came off fairly easily. are you sayiong the right hand camshaft pully needs to be moved?

No definitely not.  I'll add a picture pointing out the pulley that needs moved but it's a 2.0 litre.  Should be fairly similar in design.  Take note that the engine in the picture has been removed from the car and is upside down - so the cams are at the bottom of the picture instead of the top.

OK great thanks So in that case I think you mean the tensioner? I've got this set with tension off but still no joy I also notice that the water pump can add tension as well but there are no line up marks for the pump. Any ideas on that?

Physically move the whole tensioner pulley to the side with a 15mm (might be a 13mm, can't remember) spanner/socket.

OK Belts back on, Mark on bottom of crank is at 6 o'clock and both marks on the cams are lined up. but when I put the pulley back on for the alt belt it's mark is not lined up with the pointer. As there is no play between the crank pulley and the alt belt crank pulley i presume that's ok?

Can't really understand what you're meaning but easy way to check it's ok is to turn the engine manually first without firing the engine to make sure nothing is hitting anything in there.  Watch the tensioner to make sure it moves to the new belt position when the car is started, if not adjust it accordingly.

Thanks for you help and the photo Rickyboy. Belt is now on and tensioned up and it all works fine.

Not sure where I was going wrong but it all went on and after re-adjusting the tensioner after turning the engine by hand twice I plucked up the courage to start the engine.

As I said all was good now I can look forward to taking the car on Holiday in September.

Thanks again :y
