Where does the Thermostat fit as mine is obviously missing. It is not in the top hose, it is not in the neck that the top hose goes onto on the engine block. I have poked a pencil down there as far I could reach without any obstruction to show it was there. I have looked to buy one but there seems to be at least 5 different ones for this model. Is that true? Do you have Pic of one that is installed? beginning to wish I stayed away from this car now so come on someone and restore my faith!
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH :D

It is not really visible without some dismantling.
Basically it sits in the V at the front, underneath the plenum. A large coolant pipe leads off it to the left and emerges around the area of the dipstick.
As far as I am aware it is integral to its housing.

Anyway, what is the problem you're trying to diagnose?

Hiya,
Just trying to ascertain where the thermostat fits. Is it in the hose, as were the older vauxhalls, or is it in the neck of the aluminium housing that the top hose goes onto (it appears as though it may supposed to be) or is it a case of removing the aluminium housing and then inserting it from behind as other car makes are?
The problem is that there is no thermostat fitted.

As said, you need to do more than poke a pencil down a top rad hose. ians is correct when he say that you have to do some dismantling to get to it. It klives right at the front of the block under the plenum chamber! I'm sure you'll find a picture of it somewhere within the forum.

Do you know there is no thermostat fitted?
Does the temperature guage reach half scale quickly and remain there?
If so, you have a thermostat and it's working correctly.

Sorry I wasn't clear.
What are the symptoms? Taking ages to warm up..? Overheating?
or just trying to understand what goes where..?
-
Lovely! So it looks like it fits under the Plenum. No problem I can do that I reckon. Any parts or gaskets required? The temp is slow to reach 90ish and the heaters are pathetic so based on other motors I have owned it looks like either the thermostat is jammed open or missing.

You will need a thermostat assembly, O ring that goes under it and two O rings for the transfer pipe joint.
Have a search around and you will find lots of posts about replacing it.
If you go to all the trouble of getting to the thermostat, don't be tempted not to change it. Its an awful lot of work to have to do again.

Cheers M8,
many thanx for that, not to get to it!!!!!!

ok ill give it a go. Remove the plenum, follow the water
Pipe that comes in from the right hand side to the
centre of the v,it goes under the head and appears
in the v, the join between the coolant pipe and the
thermostat is under the head iirc. So, remove the
Aluminium pipe, held with the notoriously awkward
Bolt under it. It will be tight but it is just a push fit
With 2 o rings to twist and pull it should come off.
Then next in line is the stat housing with stat inside,
It is a right angle elbow that bolts to the block with 2
Bolts and gaskit. It is sold as one part, elbow and stat
Inside, and is located right at the front of the block
Behind the cam belt cover.Nearest you when you
Look at the engine. This is from memory about a year
Ago so please bear this in mind.

Thanx Muchly, now to give it a shot and hgope that miracles do happen and it turns out to be easy!

Its most likely stuck open (common). Actually I'm not sure if you can even remove the stat itself from the housing.

Don't be surprised if it looks as if it's closed, all of mine have been like that and replacing them has cured long warm up and cold running.
They probably open prematurely.
