I have recently noticed (or my teenage daughter did!) water in the rear n/s footwell, around the socket where the fittet floor mats would clip in. The area is pretty well sodden. I cannot find any evidence of it coming from from the doors/windows etc. It dosn't appear to be coolant (no smell or taste); no sunroof which would rule out any blockages from that area. I have done a basic check in the front by pushing fingers and thumbs hard down on the carpet and cant find any evidence of water there (not lifted the carpets yet!)

I suspect scuttle drain blocked, causing water to come in via pollen filter and cabin fan unit.
Scuttle drain is just below pollen filter - if there is water in there, its blocked.
Resolve this quickly, as the water coming through fan will at best destroy the fans speed controller, and may damage the motor itself.

Is it easy to get the cover over this area off? (not had to work on me own car since me old Viva :-[)
-
are the kids allowed to drink whilst in the back of the car? ? ? :D

it is a very easy job to do.there is a guide in maintenance guides section. :y

Open bonnet.
At back of engine bay, on edge of scuttle (plastics under wipers) is a rubber strip. Lift this off passenger side.
You see on scuttle, passenger side, is a small (18" x 3" or so) flap, lift the front edge to reveal pollen filter.
Under pollen filter is an expanse of emptiness, at the bottle of this is a small rubber drain. Its this that blocks, causing that emptiness to fill with water, overflowing through pollen filter.
HTH

yeah..but already discounted this one. It had dried but was wet again yesterday and kids not been in the car all week.
I had a thought though..I do reverse the car on the drive which is gently sloped down to the garage door, therefore anything coming from the front would trickle down to this area. Will inspect when I get home (if I can see how to remove the plastic panel above the pollen filter)

Sorry missed that one when I was posting previous reply. Sounds like a piece of whatsit...will do the biz and check it out,
Thanks for the help

If it's not the scuttle drain then it may be coming from the sun roof (if you have one)
The drains at the front of the frame become blocked, rain accumulates & finds it's way in under the roof lining, down the A pillar & into the footwell
Check to se if your roof lining is soggy

My moneys on the scuttle or a door seal :)
:y :y :y :y ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hmmm...Ok, scuttle area seems clear; can see the drain and no water...poured a bottle of water down and it all came out underneath.
Checked under the front carpets and lo and behold...H2O. Definately not coolant though..no smell or taste, is there anything from th A/C that could deposit copious amount of water into this area? Door seals all look OK. :(

AC drain pipe blocked - drains from heater matrix area through gearbox tunnel.
You need to be right under the car, look up above the gearbox and you will see the drain pipe - push summin up there to make sure its clear!
-
Thanks for that...will try to have a look...not got any ramp or pit facilities but might just be able to slide my self underneath enough to see, and yeah I will make sure wheels are chocked, car in gear h/brake on :)
-
Check and double check the scuttle drain, do make sure its totally clear as this IS the most likely cause, clean it out thoroughly dont just carry out a quick test. :y
In heavy rain, this can fill up very quickly!
-
Funnily enough...when this was first noticed it was Wednesday before last after a really grotty drive from Hants to Nottingham in heavy rain and spray, the M1 was like a river all the way from M25, although I would have thought that would have pretty much dried out by now..or am I wrong?
I did extract (from the lower end of the drain) a peice of insulating tape and from this end it did seem clear all the way through (can't reach it from the top and didn't have any thing I could bend into position. Will have another go tonight. One other point, I am sure I could just see daylight from the back corner of the 'pit' but not sure if this was just my eyes playing up after a hard day at work.
-
I actually completely removed my rubber seal from the scuttle tray as it was always getting blocked with leaves and crap. No problems since. :y
-
Oky Doky...had a good look in the scuttle area, took the drain tube out and took the little flap off the top. It was clear and bone dry, as was the pollen filter.
Guess I need to take it somewhere with ramps of a pit to check the A/C condensate pipe as I can't get under the car, unless there is a way of checking this from inside (preferably without dismantling half the interior :)).
Question: how long does the sound deadening take to dry out?
-
If you feel brave you can get it on some axle stands and crawl under! :y
-
yeah..right....not that brave :-[..I will get me local independent (AllVaux) to have a looksee
-
if drain is clear, check windscreen seal along lower edge
-
Ok, back to this again...Over the weekend after a run, I checked under the car and there was water dripping on the ground from around the gearbox area, directly under the dash if you took a vertical line up, which would mean (to me) that the condesate pipe is not blocked from the A/C, which leaves the lower windscreen seal; What is the best way to check this?
-
..but it wasn't raining over the weekend was it?
Its common to get condensate off the ac system in hot weather so may be this. Otherwise I would be checking your HBV is not leaking - that would drip in this area too. (that wouldn't really explain your interior flooding though).
-
No but was investigating possibilities and the interior on N/S is still wet (not damp, wet) and it did p**s down Monday night. I managed to squeeze a finger up between the bulkhead and the central console and there is some rubber foam there which is wet too, so it looks like it is coming from behind the dash area. The back is still very wet but boot area is absolutely dry; so I have bit wet N/S front, very wet N/S rear, no evidence of it coming through door seals (took plastic trim of and the carpet/ SD felt in this area is dry. Any more idea's as I am seriously thinking "get rid of", which would be a shame as there is nought else wrong with it. :(
I think the reason the back is wetter than the front btw is that my drive is sloped down to garage and I reverse on due to inconsiderate parking by neighbours and their vistors (I hate having to do a 5 point turn just to get out of my driveway! >:()
-
Remember the foam under the carpet in the footwell is quite thick so will retain water....
As said previously, water dripping from around the gearbox area is normally the aircon condensate. Amount dropped depends of the weather/humidity of a day, obviously, and a small puddle of a couple of inches diameter over 5 minutes is not unusual.
Just rearead back the thread. Please clarify - is it the front footwell or the rear? The scuttle drain is 99.99% the cause of water in the FNS footwell but, if the car parks with its nose uphill on a driveway then the water collects at the rear.....
As long as the water level in the header tank is not dropping, then its rainwater thats entering and not coolant. Coolant normally has a distinct sweet smell, unlike rainwater.
*** posted after you edited - you do park on a slope!! ;D
-
The problem was originally found in the rear footwell, but after investigation found it was wet in front too. Have done all the relevent around the scuttle which was clear and pollen filter bone dry.
No smell or taste to the water, and I don't seem to be losing coolant. Will try to dryout the foam best I can and keep an eye on it.
May have a go at getting the centre console out and see what is going on behind it at the dash end.
-
Depending on how determined you are the trace the fault, you could remove the interior and the carpets. This is the best way to ensure the foam under the carpets is dry and it gives the opportunity to investigate where the water is coming from.
If the slope of your drive is really quite steep then any buildup of water in the pollen filter area will quickly overflow into the car interior....
-
Dont really have the time or facilities for removing the interior (not to mention inclination!) as this is my only mode of transport. Probably start parking nose down on the drive after I have dried it out a bit. (May need a visit to the neighbours to discuss their parking habits too)
