Title: brake pad sensor
Post by: stevejones on 29 July 2008, 09:43:31
I've done one side of my brakes, and in the process snapped off the sensor connection that feeds through the pad. I am still getting the dashboard 'Brake pad' warning, but I'd assumed this was because the other side awaited doing. I've just had a horrible thought - is the dashboard warning going to show permanently if I don't fix the sensor, or will it go out when I've done the pads on the other side?

Anyone know the answer?

Steve

The warning will be up until you replace the sensor :(

Warning will remain unless you do something with the sensors.
Options are
1. Replace the sensors which I recommend if you dont service your brakes annually.
2. Cut the old sensor lead and solder the wires together then protect the joint with heatshrink. This is OK provided that you do check your brakes regularly rather than relying on the wear sensor.

It'll stay untill you replace the sensor. Or ....... untill you cut the broken end off, strip the insulation back a little on each wire & twist them both together!  ;) That'll get shut of the message, & if you have a woking sensor on the other side, you'll be fine. Later cars only have one sensor anyway.   :y

Though new sensors are a matter of a couple of quid. Notoriously difficult to get out anyway i'd just change them rather than bodging it.

They are a bit more than a couple of quid.  A pair are more than the pads themselves in my recollection.

There is an amusing picture in Haynes of a guy simply flipping the sensor out with a small screwdriver. Very funny , as anyone who has tried to do this on pads that have been there for 50k will know.

replace them!  Just get pattern parts (Delphi I think)  Make sure that you get the right ones because there are two discs types of the omega and it is possible that they could sell you the wear sensors for the smaller 2.0 discs

sensors are seperate from pads -push fit in the hole around the anti rattle spring
take old sensor and match it to the new pairs one set is dark the other lighter and are not interchangable iirc lighter colour = later models

only difference is the early 2.0 had 286mm discs after 98 all omegas had the same 296mm discs and same pads  :y

On 2001 and later, only need to buy 1 (around £7 + VAT on trade)
