After a fairly spirited drive i've suddenly developed a smell ::)
Not me but the car ;), is the sulphur like smell coming from the cat (sure it is)? and is this an indication of weak/rich mixture or iminent cat failure :-/?
thanks in advance :y

can be a sign of cat failure, imminent failure.
-
same here, when i press throotle harder, i sometimes can smell rotten eggs or something, and that not me either :D

Wallet out time :-/

;D Lord Farty Bum Whistle perhaps? ;D
Well someone had to say it.

I have got to say that on all my cars (often brand new) with cats I have had this smell anyway. :-?
Is that not just the normal smell associated with cats warming up? :-/ :-/ :-/

Likewise - only during warm up though. Otherwise little smell

Time for a changeof diet? :D :D ;D

High sulphur petrol used to cause the "rotten egg smell" but I don't know if its sold anymore. It used to cause no end of arguments as to "who's let one go" when driving behind a car burning it! :)

You got that right, IMO. When cats first came out, this problem was supposedly due to petrol. Manufacturers use a prticular brand when developing their cars. If you use a different brand, the rotten egg smell could be a result.
I have never heard this linked to failing cats.
Best try a tankful of another brand...? I've not had a problem with either Total or (when I have to) Tesco petrol.
By the way, there's a BP depot next door to work, and Tesco tankers come from there too.

Google is your friend:
"There's sulfur in fuel additives; your engine isn't burning it completely and your catalytic converter is storing it and then releasing it as hydrogen sulfide when you add load to the engine and force more air through."
and:
"Dealers will always blame cheap gas rather than the catalytic converter. If you do a lot of short hop driving, you may need to blow out that cat with an Italian tuneup. First, make sure your air filter is in good condition, or replace it, it's cheap. Then tank up with premium unleaded and get out on the superhighway or other open road where you can drive at sustained high speed to heat up the platinum catalyst and burn out the gunk."
Most cats whiff a bit after a "spirited" drive, i wouldnt worry too much :y you can always ask your local MOT station to check cat functionality ;)

did it again tonight after flooring it only for a few secs, more of an achrid :-? smell rather than the usual 'rotten egg' smell of warming up cats.
I put a K57i filter on it last week (off my old gte16v) just to see what it was like ::) and i've convincing myself that it's linked to this?
But swapped back to standard filter box a few days ago and still smells :-/
bound to cost me money me thinks :'(

I'd stick with the proper air filter - K&N's and the like are good for killing Air Flow Meters as they're oiled. The oil comes out of the filter and cooks onto the heated sensor wire..
Try another Italian decoke - i.e. drive it like you just nicked it - but instead of a quick blast, you need to do it for a few miles. Does wonders for a lot of cars where they've been gently driven for a long time.
Go on - waste a gallon of unleaded :y
