Title: Temperature guage question
Post by: Kernow on 13 August 2008, 20:30:24
Hi all,
Just a quick question regarding the temperature guage on  P reg 2.5 auto. Where is the usual position for normal operating temperature?
Thanks.

Just below midway when cruising, rising just above midway in traffic before fans come on and drag it down again.

Thanks for reply,
Mine seems to fluctuate a fair bit. Usually fine when cruising, if not maybe a little low (most of my driving is mid to late eve or at night, so would explain being a bit low), but can rise up to 100 and higher once slowed down and in traffic. Watching the guage, it twitches about quite sharply at times, but not sure if it's the fan cutting in, or because maybe there's an air block in the system.

Outside temp should make no difference - its the stats job to keep the temp constant, not matter on outside temp (assuming cooling is effiicent enough to cool adequately.

Sounds like you have a problem...

That was my thinking last week, and was going to check the stat, til I realised it's not that easy to check! Accordingt to the Haynes manual, you have to remove the inlet manifold...?

Not sure what engine you have - consider updating your profile ;)

Stat is right down in valley.  Removing plenum/intake not that difficult, but stat removal involves a sod of a bolt

Also consider updating your profile so that people don't keep asking what engine ;)

Cars are not built to be serviced, esp a stat which is not a regular service item

To change the Thermostat isn't that hard really mate, Plenum off, inlet manifold and flange. Undo the thermostat housing bolts, then wiggle it with some mole grips to loosen it from the Transfer Pipe. Undo the one bolt on the Power Steering Reservoir then move that back out of the way. You can then see the Pain in the Arse bolt, which holds the dipstick, engine lift bracket and the transfer pipe. Just make a note of which goes where as I can't remember off the top of my head. You don't need to take the transfer pipe out unless it needs changing, just pull it enough to get the thermostst housing out.
Get two new O rings that create the seal between the transfer pipe and thermostat housing, put a little grease on them before sliding into position.
Then just refit it all :y
