Hi there - just a quickie...
Noticed my HBV vacuum pipe dangling around not connected to anything whilst carrying out the various jobs i'm doing. Is it supposed to push into the rubber grommet that the heater matrix hoses and another vacuum hose go through? Or if not where does it go?
Incidentally, is this being disconnected likely the reason my heater has been cold for as long as I can remember?
Cheers,
Liam

There are lots of vac hoses in that area. If there is nothing else in that area not connected I dont see any harm in connecting it. If you have had no vaccum hose plugged into the HBV you wont have had any heat. The connection pints sometimes get snapped off so examine it for damage (HBV)

From the top of the HBV to pipe goes through the bulkhead into the car, if this is not coonected through the bulkhead I do believe the heaters don't get warm..

Awesome. Would be nice if all this work includes fixing me heater for the winter too. Funny thing is the metal pipes in the car got warm and the fans did put out a tiny amount of heat, so i thought all must be ok except for maybe a blockage causing low flow through the matrix. Hopefully this was the cause and the pipes just warmed up through conduction.
Here's where I find the heater was in fact 'disabled' by the previous owner to fix a leak ;D

Read through maintanance guide, there is a nice pic of the vac pipes and heater pipe grommit at the end.

Ah that's handy - yeah that's where it goes!
I had a look on the interior side of that grommet and there's this plastic clip that holds both metal tubes and both vac hoses in position as they exit the rubber grommet and go their separate ways. Somehow the vac hose that i found disconnected in the engine bay was badly kinked on this interior side and pushed back in the clip holding it in kinked position.
I hope my cynical prediction that my heater has been 'disabled' to bodge another problem doesn't turn out to be true :(. Must just be a coincidence and sorting this hose both sides of the grommet will cure my weak heater, right? :)

You might find other benefits as well. Since many of the vacuum pipes are joined with T pieces etc, one pipe being off can cause a vacuum leak. It may be that you will notice better performance now (multirams working) and brake servo more effective :)
