Title: Heater Bypass Valve changed.
Post by: Bionic on 12 August 2008, 05:47:51
Success at last, and the job was done without any lost skin despite all of the other 'helpers' warnings! It took me just under an hour.
On my Elite 2.5 it was most definitely not possible for my 6 year lod to get her hand into the space before the removal of the parts mentioned. Whoever says it can be done without these parts removed must have a strage idea of hand sizes and how they managed to get a pair of grips in the remove the standard spring type hose clips is beyond me. :y
The new HBV (90566947B) was bought online from the Vauxhall Parts Warehouse by using Ebay for £17.00 which was way, way lower than the dealership for the same part!
Here's how;
Remove wiper arms.
Remove trim below windscreen to expose the wiper mechanism.
Remove wiper mechanism complete.
Remove all four small pipes from plenum rear.
There is now ample room for even my big hands to get to the HBV!
Just follow the steps in reverse to complete the job.
Top up and bleed your coolant system (I flushed mine out to make a good job alround), not forgetting the anti-freeze and away you go.
Heaters now red hot and no leaks or hot water smell from the engine rear.

Cheers for that, I only mentioned it to be sure, and yeah, the job is no where near as frightening as some make out!

Ray, my thoughts exactly when I saw how snug it was back there! I left the wiper mech in place but moved the plenum cover forward a couple of inches, then it was no trouble at all. Combination of long-nose pliers to grab hold of the HBV and hose clip pliers to undo the clips. Have since invested in a decent pair of mole grips having watched TB's cambelt DVD and they're so much better for getting the clips off!

It is awkward but doable.  You need to ensure that you get a genuine HBV though as there have been early failures previously of pattern ones from e-bay sellers that label them as genuine VX.
