sounds like the o/s exhaust manifold is blowing like a good un,
its bloody terrible when its cold but when its hot its only just noticable,
my vauxhall mechanic mate says its a big job but he,ll fix it for £300, does that sound ok?
only problem is he says sometimes the studs snap inside the head and they have to be removed too,
and if left alone, the gasses can burn away the heads around the exhaust holes, is this correct?
£300 is the maximum i want to spend, not find out when he strips it that figures doubled,
so from experience is this a straight forward job or trouble, any idea,s???

Is that Vx prices or his.
Sounds exspensive to me, but then again I dont know how big a job it is.
£300 is that taking into account the possible broken studs, is it cheaper if none break?
I would get 2 or 3 prices 1st.

he recons they blow because the studs are crap and they snap,
that price is his (£1400 at dealers) says its a 12 hour job to do both sides,
sounds bloody serious to me,
problem is, thats the price if everything goes right >:(

Havent read it, but the manifolds have to come off to take a head off, so there may well be some info on there worth reading.
Is there anyone on the OOF thats local that could do the job for you.

Vx charge a lot because it's officially an engine out job.
Can be done without but very fiddly.
Thing is it's not really down to your mate how well the job goes - if the studs snap that's not his fault. Then the head needs to come off to drill out the snapped studs.
However on the V6 the studs don't snap that often and you could perhaps bodge it and put a new gasket on with say one broken stud and you might be OK.

So it's the drivers side that's blowing? Yes, it's a bit of a pig to do but certainly not the end of the world by a long shot.
I'd happily take it on for you but it would be on the proviso that if a stud snapped, I wouldn't be accountable (It does unfortunately happen). :'(
That said, you can greatly reduce the chances of it snapping by liberally applying "plus gas" - it's great stuff!
New gaskets are around £15, it's essential to use a Multi layer metal type.
The only constraint for me is time. I've got the newent meet coming up, I'm on a training course every other weekend until Christmas, and a few mechanical bits to do, but there is a chance something could be sorted :y

Drivers side is about a 3hour job for somebody compitent (It took me 3.5 hours in a field in the lakes!)
Passenger side is actually easier but, you need to support the engine and remove the engine mounts so you can ease it over a bit to get better access.
Never yet seen a stud snap on a V6......seen it on the 4 pot tough but thats not the studs at fault, its down to the manifold warping.

would you not change both sides at the same time then?

To be honest, the drivers side is more prone to failure than the passenger side so I normally do one at a time and see how it goes.
I have to say this is the sort of job where I like to have the car for say a week so I can do n odd hour every evening.

I changed mine when I did my head gaskets. All the studs came out fine on both heads.
The gaskets are £7.33 + VAT each from vaux on trade club card.

Judgeing from whats said in the forum, and from what Vx charge, are you sure the mechanic you use is a mate.?

makes you bloody wonder duntit? but he was dealer trained so maybe he still thinks he,s there :-/
he said the blow is caused by the studs snapping and letting the gaskets come away :-/
it was £250 labour and £50 for the gaskets and a set of studs but it was for both sides ::)
once this is done i just dont know what will be next :(
ive never had a car with so many well known reliability problems and such a pig to work on >:(
